hi, im k-train, a new member to this.

but anyway, im a teen whos moved into a suburban area in PA, and when i moved in i was told that because we moved into a property owned by a farm, we cant own livestock.
(i believe the farm was sold about a year or two ago though, because the land was plowed and there putting buildings in)

i went a a few years knowing that, started breeding reptiles (geckos), but now that i have started reading about chickens, i would really like to keep one or two.

heres the thing though:

my county has an ordinance saying no one can own livestock unless its a business. (thats what i got out of it) however, in one part of the law it says

"No corporation or syndicate may acquire, or otherwise obtain an interest, whether legal, beneficial, or otherwise, in any real estate used for farming in this Township, or engage in farming. The term "corporation" means any corporation organized under the laws of any state of the United States or any country. The term "syndicate" includes any limited partnership, limited liability partnership, business trust, or limited liability company organized under the laws of any state of the United States or any country. A syndicate does not include general partnerships, except general partnerships in which nonfamily farm syndicates or nonfamily farm corporations are partners. The term, "farming", means the cultivation of land for the production of agricultural crops, fruit, or other horticultural products, or the ownership, keeping, or feeding of animals for the production of livestock or livestock products."

so does that mean i could keep them as long as i didn't use them for money?

i really would like to own a chicken, i never got to as a young kid (17 now).

i would appreciate if someone could give me advice on what to do about this. ive never really looked into law before so its confusing to me.

i think it would be a great experience owning a chicken, and hopefully i can.

any kind of help or information regarding how to deal with this is appreciated.

WE have a simialiar ord. ours states you can not make money on livestock. I have spoken with the code enforcement here and I can selll the eggs as long as I do not show a profit! HELLO with feed prices there is no way I would make a profit!!!!!!!!!!! So I am going to start selling some of my flock eggs for eating and ask for a donation to the feed bill.

oh and to add to my original post, i just found out that in our deed the ordinance is stated (i assume from the farm which is, as i said above, no longer there)

so does anyone know if it would still apply?

I am not a lawyer, but this ordinance has nothing to do with you keeping chickens as pets or as livestock. It refers to corporations which you are not. Unless you choose to become one....

The ordinance is to prevent agribusinesses. It can also prevent large LLC realty firms from acquiring farm land and then turning it into developments.

Unless there is something else there, there is nothing in this ordinance that would prevent you from owning chickens.

i agree with the post above and in PA chickens r considered poultry not livestock or pets, i think u r safe from my understanding of it because u'd be a hobbiest not a corperation. i believe u r safe to raise them.

oh ok. thanks.

i only have one other problem.... getting my parents to allow me to buy some (im looking to have maybe four chickens to start.) but i think i can talk them into letting me.

Another thing to consider, our municipal code differentiates between 'livestock' and 'poultry'. Don't assume that when they are referring to livestock that they are including chickens in there.
