Many dogs make wonderful farm dogs. I'm a big fan of rescuing a dog. You can even look into Breed Rescues if you want a certain breed. So many animals die in shelter eat day it's nice to know you are saving a life.
Getting a puppy is a nice way of getting a dog you can train and teach to respect the farm animal.
If you adopt an adult dog fro ma rescue or a shelter that temperments test it's animals you can know what you are getting and know how the dog is with other animals (they only tests them with dogs and cats) But if you find a nice dog with a low pray drive it's a good thing.
The best thing is to set ground rule right off the bat with th dog, so they know what is what.
