Looks like I'm in the egg business.

Do you have any pictures of those baskets? I've been trying to figure out how to do a "gift basket" type thing with eggs, and I can't quite envision it yet.

I haven't marketed them other than this is a really small town - literally one stop sign - so everyone knows I've been raising chickens and have been asking me to let them know when I have extra eggs and am ready to start selling them. I'm in the feed store every day so they were my first customers. I'm sure now word will spread. If I could generate enough to pay for their feed, I'd be happy. All that special layer feed, flight bird feed, black oil sunflower seeds, scratch and shredded cheese they eat is running up a huge tab - but hey - guy said they are the best eggs he's ever eaten and he's eaten farm raised eggs his whole life. Guess it's an added bonus to letting them free range - the eggs taste better.

Good luck with your own egg business - I'm sure you will do well. Everyone eats eggs or needs them for cooking.

No, sorry no pics - but I'm always on the lookout at the Dollar Store for containers - only store in town literally. They always have cute wicker or plastic baskets or buckets for a dollar or less. Sometimes I use real hay but I also buy the paper straw at craft stores. Just add it to the basket or bucket or pail and add eggs - sometimes I put a bow and can also put the clear plastic wrapping paper on outside and tie up with pretty bow if it's a large basket or special occasion - you know the kind of clear plastic you see on large gift baskets - just not the hot shrink kind.

I'm thinking of making some up for sale now that I have more egg layers and maybe adding sprigs of various fresh herbs from my herb garden tied up with twine and hanging from basket handle - you get the idea - get creative - have fun. You could have fresh vegetables as well. We have a nearby farmers market that I haven't been to yet but think it might be fun to have a table there one weekend.

One time I even bought a bunch of pretty little paper boxes and put a little colored straw in the bottom of each one and put two pretty blue eggs in box - sealed with gold foil seal, tied up with ribbon - and gave one to every lady that came to my home for a women's prayer group. You'd have thought I gave them a gold bar they ooohed and aaahed so much.

thanks! ours free range also, and so far everyone loves the eggs. DS went to "sell" some to the neighbor the other day and came back and said he forgot to tell them that they were for "sale" but I told him thats ok, its good business to let the neighbors have the first dozen since they have been so cool about the chickens and since they make sure to put there dogs in when our chickens used to fly the fence! lol
