Today we found one of our girls passed. We founder in the nesting area. She was a little over a year old. We have a history of Mareks and have a closed coop (no new arrivals). She has been acting completely fine. We did our own exploratory necropsy. We found a hard ball in what we think was her ovaries. We cut it open to find an egg but looks to have lash on the exterior of the egg. Her breasts were nonexistent. Her crop and butt was blue. There was a cluster of what we assume is cancer but looked like very small egg like things inside her body. We are wondering if this is lash? If not if anyone has seen anything like this? Is there something we can do to prevent this from happening? I do not have any pictures as I didn’t have my phone with me at the time.

I'm sorry about your hen. It's hard to know what you found without photos. You may find the articles below helpful; they do show some lash eggs that you can compare.

Video is of necropsy, you can scroll through to find the section that applies to what you are looking for, the organs are labeled and the video itself is informative (long) I usually just listen to bits and pieces of the video until I get through it. Cluster of something could be ovum, cancer, tumors or? Hard to know.

Hope this helps.

Sorry that you lost your hen. Can you post any pictures of your findings? It is hard to know what you saw without pictures. Cancer is very common, as is salpingitis with lash material.

My hen just laid something that looks like a yolk but a cooked yolk. She hasn't laid in months. She's been very healthy lately and I didn't touch it. Just wondering if it's a lash egg or not. It's the consistency of a very hard cooked yolk or cheese. Not runny or slimy and there is no pus.

Pictures of the object before and after cutting it in two would be helpful. It is probably an abnormal egg, but would be good to see it. Could part of it have been eaten before you discovered it?

That is a lash egg, I am pretty sure. Cut it open and take another picture. Lash eggs look flesh colored inside, but can vary. Salpingitis or inflammation of the oviduct, a common illness, is why hens lay lash egg material. It can be found inside the abdomen when eggs reverse course inside the oviduct.
