SIGH!!! I have a cockerel about 20 weeks old now. I got him about a month ago and have been treating him for bumblefoot from the get go. I've been soaking his feet in epsom salt and changing bandages every other day. It is quite tiring but last night the last big hunk of black scab finally came off. So, we are making head way.
But when he was soaking last night he dropped a big runny load right out side of the tray his feet were in (thank god he missed). I noticed what looked like pieces of red rice. I picked one out (with my gloves on of course) for closer examination and cut it open. It was all gooey like bug guts. I am assuming he has worms:rolleyes: but I don't know what kind. I have been through so much with this guy.
I've seached the threads but can't find out what it might be so I know how to treat him. Even though he is in isolation I want to treat the rest of my flock too. Also I have a golden comet with a clipped beak who has lice (I think) so I want to go ahead and treat everyone for external parasites too. What should I use on everybody?

Ivermectin will work on internal and external parasites. I use the cattle pour on. i put 5 drops per bird (depending on size)
at the base of their neck on the flesh. Don't put it on the feathers because it won't work. I would treat very soon because both lice and worms can kill.

I did lots of research and had decided to use the Ivomec Eprinex pour on. Almost $40 for 250ml is a lot of chang but it says it treats like 42 different kinds of internal and external parasites and we won't have to wait on eating eggs. So, I guess it is well worth the money. Looked it up on TSC website. Now just need to call and make sure they have some in stock. Thanks!
I also use DE but I guess it is good at preventing not treating existing parasites.

I have an action plan, but still curious as to what the pest may be. I did notice last week during pedicure time that he was yawning. I did some reading about gapeworm and it said they were red but there eggs are microscopic. I haven't looked down his throat to see if I can spot anything. Just curious as to what it might be.

If they're rice shaped, I'd say treat with fenbendazole instead of ivermectin as it may have some effect on tapes. Tapeworm segments are more likely to shed and are rice shaped.

He could simulataneously have gapeworm (which fenbendazole will also treat). Gapeworms are in the airway so you'd have to look there which is very difficult as what we see is the gullet, not the airway. And yes - eggs are microscopic.

And on ivermectin - buy generic - it's $15 for 250ml.
