I got 4 baby chicks 6 days ago. I have been brooding them in the coop with the bigger girls. They've been in an xl dog crate covered in hardware cloth. Things have been going fine. Eating, drinking, pooping. No escapes. Well, we went out of town last night. Our neighbor is watching the chickens. She just texted me that 1 chick was running with the big girls this morning and she cant catch her. My big girls are almost 17 weeks old. So far they havent hurt her and are letting her hang with them. Shes going to try to catch her again but this is a tiny 6 day old chick in a 35 x 25 run. Does anyone think she will follow the bigger girls into the coop tonight. I'm not to worried about food since I feed all flock so she can eat and drink from their feeder. It's also bee 100+ so they havent had a heat lamp. And I guess the big girls dont mind her. I'm more worried about her being left put by herself at night.

(I also dont think she escaped. I think neighbor wanted to hold a baby and either she escaped when she opened the door or she dropped her and she ran that way)

If your neighbor can't catch her, you can wait until nightfall. Whether she joins the adults or not, she can easily be picked off the roost or ground. Just make sure she's safe from predators, the hens, and being chilled.

They're in our secure, covered run. My main worry was if the big girls hurt her but I guess shes been hanging with them all day. It's over 100 right now. Tonight we wont get below 85. Shes going to go try again. Fingers crossed she can catch her.
