Loose dogs in the country - don't know what to do

Ohhhh! These dog threads are pure trouble. Shooting the animal will get you in trouble with the owners, but then letting the animal decimate your livestock is no answer either.

When we still had the ranch, I found that if you leave a very dead animal out for the dogs to roll in, after a few times of bathing their pups, the owners will contain them.

I love the dead animal stink idea... course then you have to have the stinky thing in your yard, but hey... it just might be worth it!

My friends's grandpa took the chickens a neighbor's dog killed to the owners and left em on the porch in a box with a note saying something like "Your dog, your problem, you bury em." He waited till they were a bit icky too, and it was a hot day... it was pretty upsetting, and really brought the whole thing 'home' you might say. That was oh... at least 35 years ago, I suppose today it could be a real problem, but at the time it was pretty good, nowadays, they'd probably have taken HIM to court over it. *sigh*

When I lived in the country this was a constant problem!!!!! People just bring their unwanted pets to the country open the door and boot them out.
I tried in the beginning to be "nice" and try to catch them and take them to the shelter but that got old and the problem never ended.
I bought a used high power deer rifle, took care of the problem.
I hated doing it but I had a responsibility to protect the livestock and my dogs and I have always taken that repsonsibility seriously wether it be quality feed, quality medical care or protecting them from predators.
I even bought an ad in the local paper once warning people not to dump their unwanted pets on the Carlinville Rd as they would be shot on sight. I obviously did not post my name. The funny thing was in the "sound off" section of the local newspaper my add caused about a two week "discussion" on this subject. People actually wrote in and said I was being cruel. ME CRUEL!, what about the people who dump their animals to starve, get hit by cars, attacked by wild or domestic animals or worse. I at least ended the suffering as quickly as possible.

There is something called the "maurading dog law." It is probably in your area, as well. I would call the sheriff's department & report it. Document everything. Take pics. And if you can--find out who owns them and let them know they will be liable for any/all damages & loss their unsupervised dogs cause. In addition, get a gun and don't be afraid to SSS.

That's what I call raising the black flag.
You played nice, you tried to help save lives, but then had to draw the line.

I don't think you will find anyone on here shooting stray chihuahuas for yapping at cows. However, it is not blood thirst to protect your animals from the blood thirst of another person's pet. It's plain common sense to rid yourself of a predator attacking your pets/livestock. It's easy to be judgemental of others eliminating a dog problem, if you have never gone through the nightmare of a careless neighbor and their wandering domesticated predators.

And if said yapping dog causes my stock to run and kill themselves on the fence or break though mangle themsleves in the wire fence, it will be protection of the livestock and not poor poochy that will be in my refined thinking brain. I will not tolerate someone elses animals on my property. Neighbors woudl raise HECK if I let my cows graze on their lawns. And they really would not be hurting anything.

I protect my livestock. No tolerance given.

If I know the dog loose, I give a warning to the neighbor right away.....if it comes back, then it is shot. I have no problems doing this at all.

Get this, behind my far off goat fence I border another property. Previous owner had horses. There is a common wire fence we used.....well they sold and new owner put their vicious mutt in there..........and my kid goat got thru the fencing and the dog nailed him...goner.

So off I went and bought small square welded wire panels and fenced along that back line and now no goats can get thru or does get their heads thru.

Oh I wanted to shoot that dog soooooo bad.....LOL...but I couldn't. It never dawned on me until this happened. But problem fixed at my expense but needed. And everytime I go to the pasture to check fencing etc. that mutt barks and barks and barks...hmm...reason to load the rifle???

One nice pup lab wandered around. Asked a neighbor up the road who's it was cause it wasn't hurting anything. He said it was "so and so" dog and he has been told many times to pen it up or whatever. Well, I thought I will fix that after 2-3 more days of dog in my backyard. Baling twine for a leash and off to the pound in my truck. So I give the benefit of the doubt, then gone.

I say this all the time----yea you love your pet, keep him home, cause I sure DO NOT love your pet!

LOL
