Unfortunatley, in my neighborhood, one of the neighbors lets his 3 mid-size dogs run free constantly. We've dealt with animal control numerous times. Animal control can't trap them. He's useless. The guy was issued citations, had a court date, and it was dismissed before the Judge even made it to the bench that day. Needless to say, they are not going to solve my problem.

My husband and I constructed a run and double chicken wired it. However, we had our two-week-old chicks out in it for some playtime yesterday. Our black lab took notice of the chickens and I saw the look in her eyes and the way she watched them and now I am worried. If she decided she wanted in, it didn't look like the chicken wire would hold her back for too long.

What can I do to protect them from the dogs?

Some fence panels (hog panels) placed on the outside of the chicken wire would prevent a dog (or other predator) from ripping thru the fence.

or run an elec fence just outside of the run about the height of mid shin, chest to a lab. It will only take once and the dogs wont go near it again.

We run an elec fence across one end of our bull pen and have the center wire of the barb wire fence hot. this keeps the bulls in. My dog got into the open end of the pen where the single line of hot wire was....once. He will not go down there anymore. The fence isnt even up in that area and I can't get him to follow me there.

Upgrade the fencing to welded wire
Add an electric fence
SSS Shoot, Shovel Shut up. Most states allow you to shoot dogs that are killing, chasing or endangering your livestock.

I haven't been able to get anything done at this point. I've been working on this for six months -- way before chickens were even an idea for us. I have a feeling chickens will need to die before they do anything about it and I'm not willing to sacrifice my birds.

I will not hesitate to shoot a dog attacking my chickens. Hopefully I will be home when they do it.

I just found an electric fence kit at Lowes Hardware. I'm going to give that a try, as well as keeping the gun handy. After all, it's not the dog's fault. However, if electricity doesn't work, then they leave me no choice.

No,it's not the dogs fault, but who wants loose dogs in their yard? I would take care of the problem myself too.Hope the new zapper fence helps!

do me a favor with that electric fence first go to tsc pick up a tester nice to know for sure it works or if your brave and cheap as I am convince your wife to touch it or touch it yourself... Then you need to fold some tinfoil into say 6 x 6 sheets or get little pie tins hang a couple on each side of the fence get a can of dog food and butter it in there walk away the dog will investigate and he will do it once it is a good lesson for them coons and most any predater I wont have chickens and no electric fence...

arch love that idea. Worked with a guy at a place that had hot wire everywhere, guys dog hit one of those wires and took off. He made it home 2 days later.
