Hi there all and greetings from a chilly Germiston, in one would say sunny South Africa,
I would like to introduce myself as a new back yard chicken dad got my first 16 week old Brahma on the 9th of May 2023,
I'm going to use the template below and then I will be asking some questions about my chicks
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Pretty new I would say a month and a bit in.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Had 2 one of which passed away within the first week of having it as it had cocsidosis which I didn't know. Then I got 2 new young chicks which are just growing so well. This sitting at 3
(3) What breeds do you have?
The first chick I was told is a Black Brahma hen however I'm confused as to why there are white tips to the feathers as if it's a genetic trait or blend of 2 Brahma, the other 2 are silver Partridge Brahma and I believe one is a cockerel and the other a hen, photos and questions to follow
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I believe free range chickens are the only way to have them live, I've seen how broilers are treated and how they are bred it's quite horrible watching a bird that cannot even walk.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Well as all the pets of this household are our son's we have the hobby of restoration of old toys like meccano. Through to reptiles arachnids and everything as pets.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. As said we have quite the zoo dog, cat, chickens, snakes, spiders, geckos. Family wise we are a crazy bunch and we'll just not your average joes
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
This was not a difficult choice to join the group seeing as there are not only international members as we know every climate has its challenges so great to be able to discuss with fellow one would say neighbours, how did I find Back yard chickens well it was more a Google search asking what a 8 week old Brahma cockerel looks like of which I still need to figure out that's why I will ask in the discussions on which is our hen and which is our cockerel
