Losing my flock at an alarming rate :(

This sounds exactly like what I experienced with my little 12 week old blue cochin. Poopy butt, lethargic, sitting off by herself. I didn't respond quick enough ........ by day three of noticing that she was acting differently I treated her with Corid ....... she passed that day. Cocci is nothing to fool with. I treated all 8 remaining chickens with Corid for 5 days. That was a month ago and all 8 girls are still doing fine. Get some Corid.

It sure does sound like coccidiosis...I agree with the others that Corid 9.6% liquid is best (it does come in a powder too)- in the cattle section of the feed store.

I use 9.5 ml per gallon of water for 5 days, mixing a new batch each day. Improvement should be noted within 24 hours.

Some vets will do a fecal test for coccidiosis for a small fee if you wish to be certain. Diarrhea can also be worms, but you do have rapid losses and a younger age group in there, which leads me to think it is coccidiosis.

Coccidiosis is a rapid killer, and can kill within 24 hours. Usually it is chickens under 8 weeks of age, but can happen in older chickens if immunocompromised or exposed to cocci on soil that they haven't built up an immunity to.

Do not administer vitamins at the same time as Corid, which is a thiamine blocker.

Wow thank you for the overwellming response everyone!

So here is an update. Our Wyandotte made it through the evening, probably thanks in part to the Sulmet. We are currently calling all places around town to try and find some Corrid to give them, only our luck would have our Tractor Supply being out of it. We took the wyandotte outside from her pen we had put her inside in last night, she was definitely feeling better, moving around much better, but not quite as well as normal.

We brought her back inside to continue resting. We are going to get the Corrid in them and hopefully we can get this kicked out before it claims anymore of our birds!

To use Corid as an oral drench, you'll need to weigh them and calculate the dosage using your math skills or this link: http://www.corid.com/calculator.html

When I give medication I use a 1cc syringe (no needle) with the correct dose for one bird. Read this link before giving anything orally. http://www.peafowl.org/ARTICLES/24/
If you need help, send me a PM and I'll get back to you right away.

Updating everyone after a pretty busy week or two...

Later that day, we located a place considerably out of town that had one bag of the powder left! (Why on earth was every place in and around town out, I don't know). We began to treat the entire flock, including the last sick chicken who we had quarantined in the house.

After two days of fighting the good fight, the last of the chickens who showed the serious symptoms passed at some point throughout the night. I think she was getting better thanks to the Corrid, but wasn't eating or drinking enough, unfortunately. This bout of Cocci cost us 3 of 12 hens, taking us down to 9. All the other hens have had the 5 day dose, and seem to be unaffected.

Let this be a lesson to always have Corrid on hand! I still can't believe it took us so long and so many places to find someplace that finally had it. Now we know what signs to look for and exactly what is happening, so hopefully we don't ever have this problem again. The kids were absolutely devistated to lose 3 hens. I think towards the end of winter, we'll add another 3 from Meyer to replace them as an Easter gift to the kiddies :D

Wow I am sorry for your losses and how awful that the stores were out of it.

I am glad it seems to be over and things are back to normal for your flock.

Sorry for you losses. I keep reading about the stores being out of it, so I checked the Gilroy TSC and they are out of it. Wonder if there is a manufacturing problem?

Don't know what the problem is, in regard to availability, but I became a bit concerned seein' so many speak of it.

Rather than Corid, I just purchased Amprol 128 20% Amprolium Powder 10oz. via eBay w/ free shipping.
1 of these = 2 packets of 10oz. 10% powder, with a total price of $21.50 (I think that's what I just paid ~'-)

Didn't know (or care) if it was the best value, as I figured it'd be almost priceless if I've need of it, and nobody nearby has any ...

If you prefer the Corid in liquid form, pints and gallons are on there, too.
