Hi all,
I just got an order of Wyandottes, Cochins and Salmon Faverolles yesterday. I lost a salmon today. She was undersized and weak from the get-go. Now I seem to be losing another undersized one. She had some green, runny poo on her butt this evening, which I cleaned off. What does green poo mean and is this breed generally so fragile? All the other breeds I have are fine and strong. I've never lost chicks before! So sad.

I had 2 SF chicks in my batch last year and I lost one of them. The one who made it was very sickly and had to be separated from my other chicks until she was a couple of months old. She is 9 months old now(she's my avatar) and very small, almost bantam sized. She lays the cutest little cream colored pee wee sized eggs, at least she did until she went broody last week. I am getting her some Silkie eggs to sit on this weekend.
Don't give up on yours because they are great birds.
Good Luck

Thanks, Wannabe (I'm a wannabe goat-mom myself!).
My other 3 Faverolles seem fine, if a little small, so far. I hope they make it. There is such a contrast between these chicks and the other breeds I have. I don't think I could be doing anything wrong as the other chicks are robust and I've raised chicks before with no losses. I'm so upset!

I don't think you are doing anything wrong, they are just fragile chicks. Where did you get yours? Mine came from MyPetChicken. You can try putting a couple of spoonfulls of sugar in their water and you can also give them a drop of Poly-Vi-Sol childrens vitamins. Just make sure you buy the kind without iron. Just put the dropper up to the little beak and give one drop a day.
I did that with mine for about a week or so.
Good Luck with them!

One of these days I am going to be able to afford to fence in our property and then I will get those goats

How is mypetchicken? I think their chicks are quality, or so I've heard, but their shipping is outrageous. I like how they have sexed bantam.

My 2 salmon faverolles came from Ideal, and when they arrived, neither looked great. One was only walking backwards, and would back up to the wall and would stand up really tall and have her eyes closed. I was sure she was going to die... but I got her sugar water, and droppered her.. and she seems okay now.. still not as rambunctious as the rest, but alive. good luck!

Other than the SF's the chicks I got from them were great (and they were all pullets). The service on the other hand left something to be desired.
