a short story of what I just experienced. Hope you find this helpful in your chicken adventures.
I went outside to put my chickens to bed around 7pm in Indiana to find that I lost 11 chickens. This was ALL my chickens. The scene. 1 dead chicken missing it’s head and neck and 10 missing chickens. I was heart broken. All my hard work… gone… to nature. The chickens were about 10 weeks old too. So wasted food and water and money and time.
I came back inside, put my children to bed to come outside to inspect how the predator got in. Yes, I have a temporary fence which I left open. I figured this was how it happened. I buried the chicken as I always do and prayed to God thank you for the chickens company.
I walked back to my run to see what I would have NEVER thought would have happened. 10 chickens in a pile… dead??? No, wait. They are alive?! Hiding! O my lord. They are alive! 10 chickens hiding in my run. In tall grass (I free range my chickens)! I got those chickens into the coop and wished them good night.
My story may impact you in a way. Here is how it impacted me. Death is apart of life. I wanted to cry, but couldnt. I kept thinking about the chickens while I was trying to be with my family. Let the mind and emotions be in the moment that I am in. Family makes me smile, so smile. The dead chicken makes me sad, so frown.
I also realized that if I lost 11 chickens, that was a years worth of work gone. So even more reason to just be in the moment. Im happy I didnt lose all 11 chickens (so sorry for the teaser/click bait of the title
). But it also makes me realize how much I want to hug my family. That I have this moment with them. That I can have this second with them. As tomorrow is planned, but not promised.
