We have lost 2 of our adult chickens 2+years old in the past year about 6 months apart. Their bottoms turned red and they lost some feathers. Their vents were red and swollen. I tried soaking their bottoms in epsom salts, cleaned them good and kept applying antibacterial spray for birds. Both died within 1 week of symptoms. Any thoughts on what caused this and how I can prevent it? They were isa browns.

If is always helpful to take pictures of the swollen vent. Were they getting feather picked by the others, or possibly egg bound or suffering from water belly? If you should lose another one, your state vet could do a necropsy to look for a cause of death. If that is not possible, sometimes doing your own necropsy, opening up the abdomen to look at organs may help. When doing that take picture of organs to post here for help. Sorry for your loss.

She was not getting picked (she was one of the queen chickens). I only had 3. She hadn’t laid for the past couple months. I will look I into the water belly. Thank you
