I had 2 chicks that pipped and had their beaks sticking out but then died. What's that about? Should I have helped em out? My first time hatching with an incubator. We were so sad for them.

I just read the "topic index" on this subject and see that we shouldn't really ever help. I guess I can agree with that. So you say maybe my humidity was off. I don't really have a way to "check" it. I have a little giant. It has a water reservoir for water and I put water in every 2 days up. I don't have an instrument to monitor it though. I read in a book that said during lockdown there should b enough humidity in the bator so that the little viewing windows would have moisture built up on the inside. Is that true? In addition to having the water reservoir filled, I should put a damp sponge in there as well?
