Lost 2 to the heat

Thank you everyone for your help. Me and my sister are thinking about getting new hens but I dont know. Also I dont want my leghorn to get lonely.

If you want a couple of the hens I have. I would be glad to help out. I wasn't ready for almost full-grown hens. I was going to start with chicks first and most of the supplies I have are for chicks!

We have heat all week but today was the first day it seem to get to them. I think it builds, repeatedly hot days just get to anyone after a bit.

I went out to give them cold water, and they came over and stood in the small puddle of overflow, so I got the hose out and let it soak half the pen, so they could have a choice of cool wet mud, or dry (hot) if they didnt like their feet wet. They perked up within minutes of me doing this after they went over to the "cool muddy area" and stayed there. I didnt spray it, they hate that, so just let the hose slowly soak the ground so they wouldnt panic.

So sorry you lost your chicks. They go fast sometimes.

well I did try to post some when I first registered on this site but for some reason my computer wont let me post pics. I read that one thing that tells you how to post them but it still doesnt work.

We've been having 105 degree weather here for 3 months, and we've tried mister, evaporative cooler, fan... But the BEST thing we found is a few saucers filled with cold water. We use the durable plastic saucers for potted plants which you can get at any nursery or Homedepot, and fill them with cold water. It makes such difference. Our chickies love to stand in the shallow water and it really cools them off! You don't even need fan or misters or anything else.
I try to change the water mid-day and they love the fresh water.

I'm so sorry for your loss. How horrible. I know most of us have been dealing with this heat and spending lots of hours and money trying to keep our feathered friends alive. Everyone ribs us for having an window A/C in our coop, but even that has been working overtime with little affect. It was 105 in the coop yesterday with the a/c unit going and two fans. We were playing musical windows yesterday opening and closing the windows depending on where the sun was directly shining. One window would be opened and the other closed to keep some of the direct sun out. My hubby went and spent his half of his weekly "allowance" as he calls it, on some new fans for the coop. They now have 3 fans with two of them being duo fans in addition to the a/c unit. We too have been putting electrolytes in their water. Also misting when possible. I wish you all the best.

I've been freezing plastic 2 liter bottles and putting those in the coop. It lowers the temp in the area by 10-15 degrees and the girls like to get up against them.
