I have 14 1 week old chicks, that I got from McMurray last Sunday, in a baby pool brooder. All of them have been doing great; eating, drinking and growing like weeds. Last night I checked on them and all was well. This morning when I walked in, I immediately noticed that some were missing, and frantically started looking for them. Apparently, all 4 of my EEers managed to get out of the pool and got trapped between the pool and the shed wall, just outside the reach of the heat lamps and just low enough to not be able to get back into the pool. 2 were already gone when I found them, 1 seemed totally fine, and the 4th was alive, but just barely. I did all I could to warm her up and rehydrate her, but she died this afternoon. I am heartbroken, but learned a very important lesson today. I have since taken them all out of the pool and cordoned off an area for them where they can't get trapped or stuck anywhere. I am just sorry I had to learn the hard way, and at their expense.

Aw..

Don't worry, it's not your fault.

Some thing just happen.

That's sad, but at least it's not a problem of sickness or poor brooding conditions.

I lost several last year in a similar way. Chicks were sneaking through gaps in the wire fencing and playing under the raised chicken coop. Our stupid rescue Cocker Spaniel had noticed and took up residence under there--I figured it out when I caught her crunching on something. I felt angry and sick.

It's ok. Now you know to make sure that the brooder is more secure for the future.

My girls are 2 weeks old and I couldn't keep them in the pool any longer. They were running and jumping off the backs of the others and cruising right out of the pool. I moved them to the new coop and placed the heat lamps in one corner and they seem to be doing fine. I lost one chick out of the 33 that I purchased. I found her under the other chicks under the heat lamps. I think she must have gotten trampled the first night. My girls are growing so fast. I hope it's not too soon to be in the coop, but they love to run and flap and I had too many for a kiddie pool.

Oh my goodness, I would have never guessed they could have gotten out of that at 1 week old!!! I'm so sorry, but try not to beat yourself up over it - that could have happened to many of us.
