This happened a few days ago but between being busy and just distraught about the situation a bit I haven't really been on the site. we have been having terrible wind issues for a couple weeks. The wind was so bad one week it actually broke the lock off wooden door to the chickens area. So not having time to fix it at that point a very very large kennel was holding it shut along with a stake in the ground in front of it. Even I had a hard time assembling at all. The day it was going to get fixed he found the kennel moved with the door opened and immediately knew trouble had struck. Eight of my girls were missing. Nobody parts no trails of blood just feathers. 12 of my hens still in there huddled around my rooster who had a large gash on his head missing a spur and blood on his feet that I really don't think was his. Whatever got in there was large not a raccoon Or possum. I'm thinking coyote or fox. Either way it's obviously heartbreaking (I've never lost so many at once) and my rooster seemed so distraught for the entire day but I feel like he might be the reason I still had my other girls left. He obviously put up a fight. Which I'm surprised whatever it was didn't take him out also but I'm glad they didn't. As long as I had him he has been the best rooster anyone could ask for and always had a high respect for him. I didn't know I could respect him more till now

Oh, Rachel! What a terrible situation!! Kudos to your roo!!

I didn't really know what wind was until I moved from southern Iowa to northern Iowa. There is nothing to block the endless wind up here, and last week, it lifted a hinged roof off my duckling brooder building (a modified dog house) and ripped it completely off. Luckily, there won't be ducklings in there until later this spring.

I hope you are able to secure everybody and everything from all of your natural-world threats. And throw a few mealworms to that brave boy!

I would give them a handful of meal worms but the funny thing is when I give them all treats he always steps back and waits for his girls to get first dibs. He's very much a gentleman
