:aww I'm so sorry for what your family is going through. It's a hard lession for them to learn at that age about death. Just keep letting him know you aren't mad at him and that it will be okay and that everyone will just have to be a little more carefull around the chicks.

When my youngest daughter was five my brother let her hold a baby rabbit and she dropped it running to show it to me when his back was turned. Needless to say the poor things neck was broken and she cried herself to sleep that night . Accidents do happen and I assured her we were not mad but taught her about being more carefull and it helped her get over the shock of it.

I send you hugs and prayers for your own distress too because it isn't easy on the adults either.

Ok, I realize that this is a bit in the other direction of the post...but I have to share my little story with you...

when I was 5 my older Brother had a hampster. He NEVER let me see it which of course only made me want to see it even more. After bugging him and bugging him...my Brother finally said I could see him once the hamster got better from a little cold he had. That night my Brother went out with some friends. I thought to my 5 year old self that if I could do something to make the hampster feel better sooner that not only would I get to see him sooner but that my Brother would also be so happy with me that he'd never stop me from seeing the hamster again....
so I did for the hamster what my Mother always did for me when I was sick.....
(keep in mind that hampster cages back then were made of little metal bars not sheets of plastic like now)
So, I got a pencil and using the eraser side I coated the hamster with a thick layer of Vick's Vapor Rub. I figured it would clear him up and make him better. I coated him real good too...cause I wanted him to get better fast.

Needless to say the poor thing couldn't breathe and suffocated. My Brother was furious and screamed at me over and over for I don't know even how long....

My point is...I obviously didn't mean to hurt the hampster, but did. And because my Brother never forgave me I always felt guilty and even to this day I second guess myself about how I take care of my pets even though I know I'm doing good by them.
Please...Please reassure your Son...but also keep an ear out for how your Daughter is coping and if she blames your Son. She is young and hurt and may not realize if she says something to him.

I'm sooooo sorry for the accident. It's different to lose a pet to an accident than it is to lose them for health reasons. I hope it all goes well.
