Lost one of my better producers today, a Black Austrolorp hen. Did a necropsy and she had broken an egg inside of her. First loss I've had like this. Anything that can be done to prevent this? She died in the nest box and had just turned 1 year old.
They get additional calcium on top of layer feed and lots of water. All birds free range from 3pm every weekday after the boys get home. Spend the weekend outside in the yard.
I do have 13 new chicks to supplement my flock, from eggs hatched, so I'll be good. I had figured on losing 4 out of 16. Just didn't figure on losing them the way I did.
