Lost one of my dark RIR hens today.
She had been having laying issues and became an internal layer.
She is the one in the back in this pic.

RIP Crimson

Scarlett is doing fine, she and my 1 hatchery RIR are best buddies even though Scarlett is much bigger.

Crimson was the one who looked very much like Scarlett.

She was 2 yrs old... What is up with this?

I have no idea for sure, Lee, but it just seems lots of people are having their birds get all "gunked up" with their egglaying apparatus at this age. I just wonder if it has to do with breeding for egg production and breeding out all the broody tendencies, which gave their bodies rest during those times.

The only other loss to illness I've ever had was her sister, who had a heart attack the day I brought them home.

I had just told DW that I thought I needed to put Crimson down, and she just closed her eyes, went limp and died right in my arms tonight. In a way I'm glad I didn't have to put her down. I don't have any trouble doing it when it needs to be done, but afterward is always bad for me.
