You may have made a mistake over feeding, BUT I wonder how many chicken lives you have just saved by posting this as a warning for the rest of us!

It could have just been her makeup too. She may have been prone to obesity, it may not have been your fault at all. Thanks for posting that info. We all could always learn something from this. So sorry, she was a real cutey.

My chickens really like table scraps. I give them oatmeal every day too. Maybe that keeps thier cholestoral down too? They free range the back yard, not real big but I guess I will start looking to see if they are getting fat.
Thanks for the info. I never thought you could over treat a chicken!

I am so sorry for your loss, I will be heartbroken when one of my sweeties goes, and I'm sure I won't get much sympathy from my family.

But what happened to ou is a wake up call for me! My girls are 6 months old and I give them table scraps pretty regularly. I thought that chickens don't overeat, see how little I know.

I will definetly be cutting back on the pasta and table scraps, and just leave it at some fruits and vegetables, along with the scratch and crumble.

Again so sorry for your loss:(

I'm going to boldly state that you've done nothing malicious to your dear Alice. You didn't know it was bad for her. I didn't even know that.

She's in a place now where she can eat WHATEVER HER HEART DESIRES, and she won't gain an ounce!

Goodbye isn't forever, after all.

i am soooooo sorry ZooMummzy! What a sad thing finding your girl like that. But i have to thank you for having the necropsy and letting us all know the results. i am guilty of giving my girls tons of treats. Lately it has been a lot of angel hair pasta, since they love it and it looks like worms. Guess i need to cut back on that.

Please don't beat yourself up about it. It very well may be that Alice had a predisposition to obesity, like Lunachick said. You clearly are a good chicken mom, and now you've taught us all how to be better moms. i hope Alice is happy, pecking around in Chicken Heaven.

I wanted to thank everyone for their kind words and support. I cannot tell you how much it means to me. As you can imagine, I have been pretty hard on myself and my family and friends have not been much comfort. My neighbor wanted to know if I was going to eat her

It was very hard to read that report but I am so glad I had it done and could share it with everyone on BYC. Being on this forum has helped me so much that I am glad I can give back

It is going to be quite some time before I am over this. The run just seems empty without her and she won't get to enjoy the new larger run and coop we are building

Fruit is actually one of the things that cause fat deposits in the liver. I would stick to giving veggies and meat to the birds for treats if I were you.
