Hello all. I got 2 baby peckin ducks in march from tractor supply when they were just little yellow puffs of cute. I got them to help me deal with my new onset of Tinnitus. When they were old enough to be put outside they were in a pen with no top since we never had any predator problems that I noticed, and never had a problem. 1 week ago the ONE night we leave, something attacked our ducks. We have 2 dogs and I took 1 with us that night and left the other one at home with no access to the yard where the ducks were. Now I feel bad that if I left acces to the yard maybe my boxer could of scared off whatever it was and saved them. Anyway, the fried watching our house texted us and said something got the ducks but they were still alive. We get home and one duck had its back feathers missing with a puncture wound. The other duck looked like a rotossery chicken you buy from the store just with feathers on its head and wings. Missing skin, 3 or 4 punctures and smelled awful. Gave them both a bath and made a home in my bathtub. Next night I found maggots in a would of the badly hurt one and I picked out 5 and Thats all I could find. I don't think it was suffering as it was its normal self. It was just to messed up to heal. He was euthanized last night :( poor baby didn't know what was happening to him and he didn't start his life yet, he was only 5 months old. I didn't even name them ;( but right before he died I named him Baby. We were going to euthanize the other duck but decided she had a better chance at healing so now she is saved. I named her Lucky. We think the really bad one was a boy and he was trying to protect the girl that's why he got most of it ( I never checked the sex yet) the sad thing was they grew up together and now lucky is alone without her buddy, but Baby is in the great pond in the sky living a happy and safe life I hope. I have people saying "it's just a duck" but people who know me know I adore all my pets and I have never been threw anything like that in my life. I hope Baby knows I did the best I could for him. I went to tractor supply and got Swat ointment ( haven't used it yet) and I got screw worm spray just in case her puncture has maggots In it that I didn't see. Do i need to ise the swat ointment if he back will be covered with the screw worm spray should i alternate everyday? SWAT kees flies away but I don't have flys in my bathroom. Will that ointment help heal her or is it just to keep flys away? I have been giving her duramycin-10 in her water and in a second waterfowl she has vitamins and electrolytes. Do I need anything stronger for her invade she has infection? Am I doing things right? I have never done this before and no vets here treat "domestic ducks" I plan on Using a trap and trapping whatever got my sweet ducks. Thank you for reading my long post.

I am so sorry! I hope you catch it :(

As far as the spray and ointment, they both kill flies so I would alternate.

What can I put on the actualwound that is like neosporin? Antibiotic ointment and something that will dry it out and heal it?? Since it was attacked by a wild animal does it need an injectable antibiotic? Any help please. Thank you

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I hope you can get Lucky a friend because they really do so much better if they have one of their own. as for antibiotics neosporin works great. make sure what ever you use doesn't have anything that ends with caine. Keep a close watch on her wounds because if your other duckling had maggots then this one could too. maybe keep her wounds washed out with warm epsom salt water also that will flush out any maggots that maybe inside, and i use swat it is good stuff. put it around the wound and neo in the wound. Penicillin is what is recommended for wounds cuts and scrapes. you can use injectable or powder and put in her water. I hope she heals quickly and again very sorry.

oh my goodness, I literally started tearing up when I read this. I am so sorry, I can't imagine anything happen to my babies. Keep us or me posted with how Lucky is doing. Could you send us a picture to see her progress?

Yes. I'll post some pictures soon. They are ugly pictures so prepare your eyes when I do. Lucky is starting to grow back her feathers except in the spot that had the puncture wound is still working on healing.
