Lost half my flock

Some of the members here are the reasons I didn't quit. Sometimes all we need is a bit of support, and this is a good place to find it. In my case, I needed some educating too, also courtesy of BYC members. :)

I'm sorry you had to rehome your guineas. Like you said, flock loss is hard whatever the reason. Guineas are cool, a bit annoying at times, but I love'em all the same. They're just so unique, it's hard not to love them. Welcome to Florida by the way. :frow I'm just outside Orlando.

Btw...maybe you should get on some of the BYC Florida threads with your encouragement. I posted on the Florida threads when we were in the process of moving and asked about moving to Florida with guineas. I got only one response that said that I should not try and move my guineas there or they would die due to the change in climate. The Florida threads could use your encouragement and positive attitude!

I follow a FL thread, but it's pretty dead unless you want to see the same swap advert 3 times per page. My experience with asking questions there was pretty useless. I know for a fact there are tons of people here in Fl and even my area with chickens, but not many on BYC that I have found... :( So I tend to just bypass that section of the forums, though I keep it of follow anyways.

We've pretty much hijacked this thread... If you'd like to get to know one another some more, stop on by my thread in the ducks section. I might even have a guinea that needs a new home. ;)

I'm so sorry for you and your wife! I lost a chick to a hawk right in front of me, through a gap about 6inches wide! I was devestated, because my chickens are my pets, and I felt like a terrible owner, since I had just gotten them a week ago (my first chickens ever) and I thought they were safe... But 2nd batch off chicks grown later, and I haven't lost one! Dispute the usually mortal illnesses I have had to deal with.. I've learned so much from my chickens! I hope you can secure your coop with the advice given!

My wife and I got 4 more chickens, and will hopefully get a rooster tonight. I also spent all day beefing up security. Pictures attached! Please let me know what you think. I installed hardware cloth around the base, put down a 2' wide apron, chicken wire on top of the bird netting, and put hardware cloth on every gap I could find! Constructive criticism welcome! And of course pictures of my 4 new girls are included as well!
