I've known all along that my little cross-beaked EE chick probably wouldn't live very long, but it was so brave and tried so hard that I had to give it a chance. She made it almost 11 weeks. We never did figure out whether she was a pullet.
This a.m. when I went out to the coop, Spike was laying down and just barely breathing; I knew it was time to help her to the other side. I hope she didn't suffer through the night before I found her.
Now I have to tell my 5 year old granddaughter that her favorite chickie is gone. She won't be surprised, because we've talked about Spike being small and weak; she'll just be very, very sad.
Thanks, everyone, for the advice you've offered in keeping Spike going. She had a longer, better life than would have been possile without BYC.
