My chicken, Eugene , just died for no apparent reason. I'm not even sure if Eugene was a pullet or a roo. Think he was a roo because he and my other roo were starting to chest bump. Barred rock about 4 months old. Anyway, just yesterday I found him lethargic in the barn. I assumed heat, so I brought him into the house, gave him water with VetRX and let him rest. He was gone this morning. No mites, no pasty butt, no trauma, no raspy breathing. Now, my flocks free range during the day, have water sources in 6 different spots PLUS a creek. Lots of shade...they hang out in day by creek under low hanging trees and shrubs. I feed them laying crumbles and a little scratch. Meal worms for treats and occasional veggies. Eugene was fine and acting normal yesterday morning. Ideas? I'm so sad, Eugene was a sweetheart.

Without a necropsy it's just guessing. There are many reasons that it could have happened. Heart attack, he ate something toxic, illness/disease (it's not always obvious) etc. I lost a young cockerel once that ate a peach pit (cyanide). It's always a good idea to consider necropsy when there are questions about what happened.
