Couldn't help but share this! We have only been "chick" owners for 23 days but I do believe they have become a permenant part of our lives! My daughter is most in love with them... lol It was evidant today when she went missing and i found her in the run reading to her favorite chicken.... who by the way is so attachet to her it only let's her pick it up and hand feed it... lol Is that normal chick behaviour?

We have 7 ~ 2 rir's , 2 black guys and 2 of these pretty white guys ... the man at rural king had no clue what they were (great huh)... I think they are around 6 weeks old but who knows as the nice rual king workers had no clue of that either when we bought them. They are all growing nicely though and eat well... lol They spend their day outside in a protected run but are still spending the night inside our garage under a heat lamp as it is still getting into the 40's and 50's here at night brrrr.... we plan on building their coop this weekend thought :)

That's a beautiful picture!! Between a lovely child reading all on her own WITH her beloved favorite chick...

Just want to let you know, if you want your chickens to live a long healthy life...GET RID OF THE CHICKEN WIRE! It seems to have been named to let you know what it will keep in -- but not what it keeps out...which is NOTHING. A family or neighbor's dog can tear through it like tinfoil and kill your chickens within seconds. There are SO many heartbreaking storied on BYC alone about loved flocks lost because they used chicken wire. The only safe wire to use is a strong welded wire and preferably something with holes too small for a raccoon to get its hands through as they are notorious for pulling any part of a chicken they can reach through wire. Hardware cloth is a bit costly but worth every penny. Also consider a dig skirt -- dogs, coyotes, weasels and rats will burrow/dig underneath wire to get at chickens.

Don't mean to rain on the lovefest but I'd hate to see your sweet daughter experience the pain of a headless chicken or nothing left of her favorite pullet but a pile of bloody feathers. Please go to the Predators section of the forum and learn from others' mistakes.

Wishing you and your family many more beautiful moments with your feathered family members.

awwwww that is precious!!!!! see now you have an excuse for more. 'It;s helping to educate our daughter!" welcome to the world of 'chickendome' It's an amazing and awesome way to let you kids experience animals. Your new chicks will become her best friends. Yes, it is normal for the chick to become attached to you daughter and let her feed, hold, etc. her. Just wait until your daughter wants to bath her, dress her up, bring her inside because it's storming out, put a doggie coat on her in winter, but bows in her hair, push her around in a baby strroller, get a leash for her so she can take her to family picnics, et.
