This morning at 6am i went out to check on my four babies as i do every morning and i could see three of them outside, which is unusual i thought sense they are normally still in the coop at that time. I looked in the run and whistled, yet still only three. I looked in the coop and immediatly noticed one of my white leg chicks (7 weeks old) laying on the floor dead. Upon closer inspection i noticed a large patch of feathers missing on it's neck and it was wet from its beak to its shoulders (it rained last night). The only cause of death i can surmise is that it got its head caught in the chicken wire and in the struggle probably broke its neck, freed herself and made it into the coop and died. My first thought was a predator but upon close inspection there were no signs of a break-in. I have heard of chickens getting their head stuck in the wire and dying before so that is my best theory at this time. Today i will replace the chicken wire with a finer mesh to prevent this in the future.

Needless to say i am now done to 3 chicks. I originally started with 6 (that was the minimum you could buy from TSC). I really only wanted four so at five weeks of age i re-homed two of them with a teacher colleague at work. Ideally i would like to have 4 or 5 chickens. Is there anyone out there in the Tidewater Va. area that would like to re-home a Plymouth Barred Rock or an Easter Egger?

So very sorry for your loss...so sad. With that said, it does sound to me like a weasel got your pullet. Is your flock allowed to have access to the run area during the night????

A weasel? Never even thought of that. Didn't even know we had them in Va. Can't say i've ever even seen one. How would he have gotten in the run/coop?
I do not barricade them in the coop at night. How would the weasel have gotten in there? The largest hole he would have had access to is thru the chicken wire.

Just googled "weasels getting chickens" and i see they are through-out Virginia and it is not recommended to use chicken wire on chicken coops. It is not a protection against predators. Guess i'll be changing it out to something more durable today.

Why would he just kill the chicken and not eat any of it? Like i stated earlier there were feathers missing on its neck and it was wet from beak to shoulders.

Thank you for your response.

Weasels are very very sly...they can get through a spot no bigger than a couple of inches sometimes. I use 1/2" hardware cloth on ALL my needs for both coop and run and be sure to bury it down and out...why? Because weasels can DIG! Here's an example:

Use this only as an example! Because the wire used in the above pic is what they call 2" x 4" field fencing...NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Use 1/2" hardware cloth for sure. Hope this helps some...keep us up-to-date!

Just got back from Lowes and got my 1/2" hardware cloth. Wife and i will replace the chicken wire tonight. So whatever the cause (predator or head stuck in chicken wire) this will solve the issue and hopefully i won't lose anymore.

That's great! I hope you saw my previous post with example of how to bury it out and down along the edges....get the little scumbags!!!
