Don't use DE that is not food grade. The pool stuff is the wrong kind. Personally I didn't have any success with DE but some people like to use it as a preventative. Just make sure it is food grade.

I only had two hens that were infected! But I was safe and dusted all of my birds just in case! I forgot my mom said we used seven too! I hope they will be feeling better soon!

Thanks, Kaiden. So far, the Sevin seems to be working. My girls seem happier already. I will treat them again this weekend and hope that is the last of those horrible pests. I am learning new things every day.

Mary and Cafarmgirl - sorry I missed your posts/edits earlier. No, I do not treat with a wormer. I have never used ivermectin before on my chickens. Is there a good protocol for this? Several of my girls seem a little bit on the skinny side. Some are thinner and some are fine. I do treat my dogs with Frontline. Is this the same thing and how often do you treat? I like to stay more "organic/natural", but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

The only approved wormer for chickens in the USA is piprazine, which only kills some roundworms. I'm not impressed! Frontline isn't approved for ANY food animals, and has no known withdrawal period, but lasts long, and is comparatively more toxic for birds than mammals. Ivermectin is used in humans and food animals, degrades quickly, and has been safe for chickens, and kills many parasites. Some people use the equine paste at enormous doses, and don't seem to kill their birds. I use the LA injectable at 1 m,l. per 80lbs. body weight, either orally or on the skin. Your post states "LA injectible". (Which is an antibiotic. Perhaps this is a typo that needs to be corrected?)
