Lost my first egg

Sad news, I went on vacation and left my husband to watch the girls. I was only gone 1 night and my little Butter Cup didn't come home. My husband left the coop door open a little but she has been gone 24 hours and no sign of her. Put a crimp in the plans

Still no sign of her at all. I'm afraid she is gone. I'm so sad. I told my husband to lock them up tonight. I couldn't bear to lose another. Silly to cry for a chicken.

I'm a bit behind. Sometimes pullets can produce a very large egg when they're first laying. So it's hard to know if it's a new layer or if it's just a large egg from one already laying.

I'm so sorry to hear about Buttercup.

I have had the occasion when the odd chicken didn't make it into the coop when we've been away, usually a young inexperienced bird...but they usually show the next morning. I'm still hoping she shows up.

And it's not silly at all to cry for a chicken. I've certainly cried about mine in the past and I'm sure there will be times in the future where something will happen. I grew up with chickens, but I never thought I'd be so head-over-heels about chickens as I am now. I totally get why you're heartbroken.

Can't believe I have a happy ending to the story. Long story short I posted on Facebook that she was missing, one of my neighbors noticed a "stray" hanging around the bunny barn. My neighbor a couple of houses down raises rabbits, probably about 100.She sent me a message to check with the neighbor, and it was her. She had somehow gotten through the fences and couldn't find her way back. As soon as my husband came over with a piece of bread she almost jumped into his arms. The next day she blessed me with her first egg.

Oh my gosh! That's fantastic!!!

I'm so happy to hear you found her.
And that she laid her first egg.

She would've been so happy to be home and see familiar faces.
