well i know its apart of owning chickens, but so far I've been pretty lucky with my girls ( except for two - one just disappeared & the other was 'gotten' by a hawk or something similar - she was a BB red). this evening i went to check on my girls & I found my RIR Lucy laying on the coop floor. I have no idea how she died, theres no trauma or bit marks. I wish I knew what happened.

I guess part of me knew this day would happen, but you're never ready for it. She was one of my really friendly hens. I will miss her.

thanks for your time

So sorry to hear about your girl! I recently lost a few too. Non-chicken owners get surprised at how attached we get to our birds, but they are special. Quite honestly, I am surprised at myself at how attached I have gotten to my girls. (First time chicken owner.)Losing them is not an easy part of raising them. So sorry!

Akyramoto, If you are anywhere near UC Davis, you can drop off your bird there and get a free necropsy to find out the cause of death. They also have labs in Turlock, Fresno, San Bernadino, and Tulare. You can also fed ex the bird carcass there by putting it in a double plastic bag and adding a cold gel pack or one of those blue ice things. Just keep the carcass cold but not frozen, until you can get it to the lab. You can drop off afterhours, they have a receiving room with a frig.

here is their website:http://cahfs.ucdavis.edu/

They dont charge for testing back yard flocks.

Im sorry to hear that, its always the nice friendly ones that seem to go.
You are lucky you can try and find the cause by necropsy, i dont think we have a lab near me.
I hope you can find a nice hen to replace her.

My deepest sympathy. Oh it is always so sad when we lose a pet and friend. I don't care if it is a chicken. I think I would definintely get the free necropsy done. For peace of mind anyway. We are thinking of you Akyramoto.

thanks for all the kind words, I think I will try to get the free necropsy done, just so i know what caused her death. Thanks again.
