One of the new hampshires is dead. I'm sad, but thankful it's not one of the Araucanas--they all have names and the kids are very attached to those.
Went out for one last check before bed (checked on them 2 hours ago), and there was one who was flattened next to the feeder--looks like she fell asleep next to the feeder and got her beak shoved underneath it and then trampled. They weren't huddled too close--just sleeping all cuddly like normal (brooder temp is 84, which is where it has been all along)...just seems she fell asleep in the wrong place at the wrong time...no injury or blood, just all splatted out like they sleep, and dead.
Worst part was I picked her up to take her out of the brooder, and another one--a barred rock--grabbed her little foot with its beak and started to tug of war with her. I felt so bad, here she is, smooshed to death, and someone wants one last piece of her. Rude little things...
Oh, I'm bummed. They're so cute, and this seems like a freak thing. They have plenty of room to eat--it's a 14 slot feeder with access on both sides, so it's not like there's a line to eat...rest in peace, little blue headed yellow chickie. 26 chicks becomes 25.
