Hi,

I am so sorry for you loss. It is even harder when the kids are very attached to the Hens. I understand how you feel.

One year we got our kids a pool and put it in the drive way for them to play in. We got rid of it when I found
some of the wild birds had got into it and drowned. I felt so bad for the birds, I had no idea why they would
fly into the pool.

I offer my thoughts and prayers to your family during this hard time and give your son a hug for me.
He is a brave boy.

Very sad, especially on his birthday. What is supposed to be a great day is one he will remember with pain.

I am new to chicks (< 1 week so far) and now have a question about the possibility of drowning. I can understand them getting trapped in a hole or bucket - even human babies can drown in 2" of water in a bucket. When the chicks are bigger, they will sometimes be outdoors in a barnyard that has a pond. Are they 'smart' enough to not go swimming? Or get out on their own (it is shallow and not steep sided) if they to end up in the pond? I've posted the layout in other threads and no one has warned me about the pond, but now I'm kinda worried.

Thanks,
Bruce

Hi Bruce,
thank you for your kind thoughts. I Never thought about the possibility of what happened, happening, since we have 3 ducks that these chickens grew up with.

Ive seen her walking around the edge of this little area, dipping her head in to take a drink, and thats it.

Im not sure about how well chicken's depth perception is, although I know they see color, like we do.

If they are brought up with the pond, I feel they will know their boundaries since there Always is water in it..In my case, it suddenly had water, and either she "forgot" that there was water or a duck pushed her in, either by accident or on purpose.

So, Im thinking that if they grow up with a pond, they are less likely to fall in..but accidents happen, as I am proof..

It was something that never crossed our minds, and of course, thats when this happened.

I hope I could answer your questions, because this is all so new to me..And these guys are over 1 yr old...

i wish you great luck with your birds, Im sure youll do fine..

I'm so sorry for your families loss. My family lost one of our dogs earlier in the year and to say it was torturous is an understatement. I'm a Veterinary specialist so trying to explain to my three kids why I couldn't save him was gut wrenching. My husbands also an army vet (I noticed in your sig) so your post touched me. You're in my thoughts.

Thank you , also, for your thoughts. It doesnt get any easier when we lose loved ones or our beloved pets.

I was honored to serve my country in both the Army and Navy. I was commissioned into the Army back when there werent too many women officers , especially women officers who now have combat veteran status.

Tell your husband "thank you", also, for his service.

I am very sorry for your loss. I lost my favorite silky a few weeks ago and I am still having bad days.
The coop just isnt the same without her. My thoughts are with you and your family

I am so sorry for your loss. I have 4, 8 week old Silkies, 2 mottled cochins and a Millie..Ive never had any before, and I had hoped the silkies wouldve been gentle and tame, but so far, no dice..If I even raise my hands . slowly, they freak out and run into a corner..Now the cochins are the lovers.

May I ask how old your silkie was?
