Lost Scout

Fortunately for both Gytha and Gomez, as the man's feet were getting wet and sore as well, the cave in which they were headed to was not far away now. Gradually, the gentle banks of the river had been giving way to steeper and rockier cliffs. In order to maintain their track, they were forced to begin climbing the rock formations as the river dropped lower below them. After about twenty minutes of climbing the slippery rocks, Gomez emerged onto a narrow path, the same one which Laethros, Charles and Raven had crossed only an hour before. "At the bottom of this path lies a cave," Gomez explained to Gytha. "The cave leads under the river, and will make our journey much shorter as the road is miles further downstream. It will also provide shelter for the night, unless you want to carry on in the dark."

"I just can't see well enough to keep on all night," she said after a few moment's consideration. Not only that, but she was exhausted and hungry and now cold from having wet feet. "Can you see in the dark?" she asked, wondering how they would navigate a cave at all since neither of them had torches.

"Not any better then you," he admitted. "But I have traveled through this cave before and I know where we can stop. Might be a cold night because I don't have anything to sleep on... on the bright side though, we won't get rained on-- although the tunnels do occasionally flood." He added the last part with a playful tone, as though he was partially joking. "Careful on the rocks, its downhill from here and I'm not coming in after you if you slip..."

Strider rode until it was nearing dark, then he brought the group to a halt. "We need to make camp for the night."

"Here?" Danielle looked around nervously, as if she was expecting to see an orc pop out in front of them. "Aren't we still pretty close to the camp? Where is the road from here?"

"The road is another hour's ride from here, but it would be full dark before we reached it." Strider answered and held a hand to her to help her dismount. "Were actually a fair distance from the orc camp now."

Danielle took his hand and dismounted from the horse. She wished that she had her coat with her as the nights were cool and all she had on was a thin dress.

"I will be," she said, picking her way very carefully down the narrow path, using her hands against the face of the rocks to keep herself steady.

"Hey," she said, awkwardly, but sincerely, as they finally reached the mouth of the cave. "Thank you... for everything. I don't think I could have made it on my own."

Gomez paused and looked back at her with the smallest hint of a smile on his face. For a moment, it almost made him feel guilty for what he was about to do, but that feeling quickly vanished. "You're welcome... really though, it was my pleasure." He stepped into the cave and was almost instantly swallowed by darkness. "The floor is reasonably smooth, just follow my voice. The spot isn't too far ahead of us."

Gytha stepped into the darkness after Gomez, feeling almost off balance by how dark it was. She reached out a hand, running it along the wall to help her keep her bearings.

"You hear that?" Charles asked, voice barely above a whisper. "Is that Gomez?" The creature usually showed up silently, but he seemed to be speaking to someone.

"I dunno," Laethros said, drawing his blade just in case it was someone else....

Gomez was also using his hand to guide him through the cave. It was hard to balance in the pitch black cave, as Gytha was finding out, as there weren't any visual clues to tell them which way was up and down. He wasn't sure whether or not Laethros and Charles were even in the cave as he hadn't really given any advance notice, but hopefully they wouldn't alarm Gytha in a way that made her run. At least she would recognise them as 'friends' instead of 'foes', though, because he didn't think that she was aware yet of their plot. "How are you making out?" He asked, both to make sure that she was still there, and to alert his hidden companions to his presence.

Ruby held a hand out for her passenger to dismount also.
Strider dismounted and ground tied Stone then disappeared to check the area for any dangers.
Ruby dismounted after her passenger, holding the saddle for a moment before she could move away enough to open her saddlebags. "Danielle, come here please."
