Lost Scout

Grishkah pulled up Ruby's shirt and leaned down, inspecting the infected wound. Luckily, the infected bit was not large... at least not yet. But it would spread if not tended to as soon as possible. She brought her knife from her belt and placed one knee on Ruby's back to keep the girl from jerking too much from the crude 'surgery'. Then reached down and cut away the small bit of infected flesh, a process that took several small cuts.
Ruby couldn't help jerking as the knife bit into her back. She screamed out again but tried to stay still for the improvised surgery.

Grishkah actually cringed slightly as her new slave screamed and jerked. Killing humans in battle was one thing, but patching up the wounds of one she hoped would live seemed an entirely different matter and she didn't particularly like that she was hurting the slave. But she only increased the weight of her knee on Ruby's back until she was finished. The whip mark on Ruby's back was bleeding again, so she quickly smeared another glob of the sticky, smelly ointment over the new wound. She added a smaller amount of the ointment to the other whip mark, even though it seemed to be healing up without infection before removing her weight from Ruby's back. Finally, she pressed a new bandage to fresh wound.

Knowing that she needed to prepare for the raid on Camden and should not waste much more time fussing over the slave, Grishkah reluctantly untied the rope from the post and used the leash to urge the girl to her feet. It was time to put her in the cage and just hope for the best.

Ruby was going numb to her surroundings, barely catching herself as dizziness threatened to overwhelm her when she followed the pull of the rope around her neck. At the moment she wanted nothing more than to sleep, but she stood. Quietly she swallowed and forced herself to concentrate on the orc. More out of habit than defiance she met the orcs eyes, her jaw clenching to hold back a whimper. She would not cower no matter how much she hurt. She didn't know that Grishkah was just going to take her to the pen again.

Grishkah growled a command to the girl, using the rope leash to lead her out of the tent and toward the cage in the center of the camp where Danielle and Luella were being held. Grishkah unbarred the cage door and removed the leash before ushering Ruby into the cage.

Aelfric had drifted off to sleep for a few hours, but was awake again and it seemed he had the cookhouse to himself. His wrists were already sore and rubbed raw in places, but he half-heartedly worked at the leather bonds again. The loop around his right wrist didn't feel quite as tight as the loop around the left, so he concentrated his efforts there, cringing as the leather rubbed the raw skin again.

From his vantage point, he could look out the door and saw an orc leading a girl toward the cage in the center. For a moment, he thought it was Gytha. But no.. this girl was younger and the color of her hair was slightly different. Either way, the sight reminded him that he needed to fight, not just for his own life, but for the others the orcs held prisoner. He looked around the cage, searching for some ray of hope. His eyes were drawn to the knives along the wall. If he could but get his hands on one, he could remove the bonds and then... somehow... escape and plunge the blade into the heart of the disgusting creature called Gomez...

Ruby followed Grishkah to the cage and stood to let her remove the rope from her neck before going inside. She blinked at the other two then made her way to the back and lay down before she could fall down. Healing sleep claimed her quickly once she was still.

Balrash came over to Grishkah when he saw her put her slave in with the others. He walked over to her and looked in at the slaves "Balrash watch slaves tonight" He glanced at her and grinned "No let hummie go away"

(Sorry, I had a reply written yesterday but the browser on my phone crashed and I lost it all!)

Danielle was sitting at the back of the cage with her knees drawn up to her chin. She was staring dully straight ahead but didn't seem to be looking at Grishkah or Ruby, as she didn't react at all to the door opening.

Luella was pacing in small circles, but stopped and looked up when the door open. She felt her stomach lurch of the sight of the other girl, bloodied and exhausted as Grishkah pushed her in. So far she hadn't seen the orcs bring back Mark or Bagira, hopefully they had gotten away and were on their way to find help...

Mazoga appeared from behind Balrash with a cheerful grin on her face. She always looked excited, even though she was missing out on the raid. "Got that right, we keep em' here and workin'" She assured Grishkah. "You best get goin', looks like they leavin' soon."

At Gytha's words, Ezra could not help but interrupt the two higher ranking individuals. "The girl, did she tell you her name? What did she look like?" He insisted urgently. In his gut he was sure he knew the answer already, but at least the confirmation would prove that she was not only there, but alive still. For the time being, anyways. He felt sick to think of what could be happening to her at that very moment while he stood helplessly in Ragnar's home.

Ahead of Terrowin, David and Jasper, a grey horse slowly appeared on the road in front of them. It was walking towards them with two people on its back, but they were slumped over and limp for normal riders. As the trio became visible to them, the one of the back raised his arm and waved it urgently. "Hey! Hey! Please, you over there, please help us..." A weak voice shouted...

Gomez had decided to let Aelfric brood for awhile over the fate of Gytha before approaching him again. He briefly considered going back to the caves and bringing Gytha back to the camp to show Aelfric, although he admitted to himself that the temptation went further than simply getting information out of the man. His twisted mind was already fantasizing over what Aelfric's reaction would be if Gomez was indeed able to carry out his threat... however, with the orcs leaving so soon he knew he wouldn't be able to travel to the caves right away. Perhaps that bit could wait for awhile. He could be patient...

David looked to the two riders and made a motion for Terrowin and Jasper to stay back in case it was an ambush and nudged his stallion forward. He pulled to a stop beside the horse with it's two riders and looked them over quickly then scanned the forest nearby "Mark?" He asked when his attention returned to the riders

(Ugh! Hate when that happens! )

Gytha turned her gaze back to Ezra and it suddenly became obvious to her that this was the girl's father. Besides the family resemblance, the torment written over the man's face was impossible to miss. "Danielle," she answered softly, then added, "last I saw her she was in good health. Frightened, but suffered no substantial injuries." She left out the crack the orc had given the girl across the face, not wanting to cause the man any more stress than he was already feeling.

--

Grishkah gave her slave one last look before she shut the cage and re-barred the door. "We will need more cages when we return," she said to Mazoga and Barash, grinning and showing her sharp teeth. Then she hurried off to prepare for the trip to Camden.

Barash nodded and looked to Mazoga then to the cage the slaves were in. He figured he would be working on making extra cages through the night to hold the new slaves that would come when the others returned.

(Sorry, I haven't forgotten about you guys!)

Gytha's words did little to calm Ezra's fears, but he nodded his appreciation to the woman and looked questioningly at Ragnar. "What will be done once Wedmor and Camden are warned?" He asked. "When will we march to the orc camp to rescue the people kidnapped? They could be dying as we speak!"

--

Mazoga didn't particularly relish the thought of being up all night making cages, but realizing that the others would be marching all night, she sucked it up. "I'll tell Ghegari to get a good fire going." She offered. They would need a hot fire in order to melt the metal enough to weld the bars together. It wasn't a fun, or pretty, job and the end product was crude and ugly looking... but it was strong and thats all that mattered.
