I received my order of 18 chicks yesterday around 8:30 am. I was at work, but didn't want them to stay in the box any longer than they absolutely had to, so I went ahead and clocked out and was on my way to the post office. I ordered 5 oegb Wheaton, 5 oegb silver duckwing, and 5 golden duckwing Phoenix bantams.
Upon opening the box all the chicks were energetic and alert, except for one oegb Wheaton that was practically dead. It was motionless and seemed to be gasping for air. I got it to drink a little slightly sugared water, but it died minutes later. The rest of the chicks got their drink of water and went into the brooder. All of them seemed to be doing fine, but the next morning, today, there was another chick that died for no apparent reason. This time a golden duckwing Phoenix. They did send two extra chicks of the silver duckwing. So now I'm left with 4 oegb silver, 4 golden Phoenix, and 6 silver duckwing, go figure.
I have had to seperate 6 chicks that got both eyes stuck shut bye picking from the bully of the batch. Luckily I was able to set up two brooders. After opening their eyes with warm water and q-tips both groups are seemingly doing great. They are eating, drinking, running, and flapping like healthy chicks tend to do.
I feel like the rest should make it without further complications, ill keep my fingers crossed. Thank you for reading, feel free to ask questions or give any advice, I am somewhat of a novice flock raiser, this is only my 3rd group of chicks. Ill keep everyone posted with a daily update.
