Oooookay, so the first question: Has anyone ever used collars to ID their chickens? I can tell all of my birds appast, I just thought it would be quite adorable to give them their own collars witH a name tag. What would be some other options that I could put a tag on? A harness or maybe chicken saddles?

Second question: I have a hen that always has poop stuck to her in clumps. She is healthy, laying eggs fine, eating fine, and has been dewormed. I was advised years ago to just end up plucking her feathers :( I feel bad for her. She is a rumpless araucana, and I had read that they plucked the femal. Birds for breeding as well, but I still have problems with her every once in a while.

Third question: What can I do for deep litter method, does it have to be out of the rain? I am working on expanding my run, but what I have now they have destroyed the grass just like I expected them too. I threw a straw and hay mixture into the ground and they did a good job sspreading it for me, bit it still gets pretty messy when it rains, do I need more bedding? Should I add something else to the mixture? The next section I will be building will be covered.

I would use about 4" of litter to start. I use eucalyptus mulch because it is free from chipping my trees. Many use pine shavings. If it gets wet frequently just keep turning it with a pitchfork to prevent mold. Hay gets mold more often than shavings.

I don't have collars but I know some have ID bands on legs, you could stitch names into their saddles.

Is the poop blocking the vent or just unsightly. If blocking vent you might need to trim/pluck feathers around vent. If just unsightly, then it is a personal choice.

ok. i will add more bedding into their run when i get the chance.

On the poop, it blocks her vent. It is to the point she has a bare bottom because i only know to pluck it. I feel bad because she gets upset with me, but I would rather keep her bare bottomed than for her to get blocked or have maggots. ; ^;
