Can a chicken lose the will to live?

Many years ago as a kid I brought home 2 chicks, at night we placed them in a cage and covered it with a plywood so no animals or birds can harm them, a neighbors kid tried removing the plywood and it fell on the chicks badlely hurting one chicks leg, it ended up getting infected and he died, the other chick was devestated and looked depressed, he barely moved and wouldnt walk more than a step or 2, it lasted for a while until we decided its time to let him get rid of his misery and we had it slaughtered .
