Hi all. I have gotten lots of great info from here in the past and decided it was high time to join. I have a pressing question about a hen that just came off an unsuccessful hatch that I'll post someplace else (I'll post it in Managing Your Flock). She's getting abused by the others pretty bad.

I have 8 chickens that I've had for about a year. 7 hens (2 buff orps, 2 barred rocks, and 3 RI reds) and a RI red rooster named Cogburn (as in Rooster Cogburn for other duke fans out there). Also just got a half dozen meat birds recently. Those are separate.

As I mentioned, trying to hatch some more. I built big for the coop and pen so expansion would be easy.

Here's to low maintenance farm animals. Cheers.

Welcome to BYC!

Sorry about your hen. Sometimes you need to section broodies off so that the other birds do not bother them. Keep food and water in this section for her and she will be safe and should stay on the nest. Make sure the nest is low to the floor so babies don't fall out far.

If you have any other questions, that is what we are here for. Welcome to our flock!

Thanks TwoCrows. She's done being broody; none hatched. I posted a detailed thread under Managing Your Flock.

Welcome to BYC. Broody hens have to work their way back into the pecking order. Their changed demeanor, puffiness, and clucking seem to make the rest of the flock forget just exactly who they are. She will regain her position in the flock.

Thanks I sure hope so. Im not super emotional but it bothers me to see anything getting picked on, especially with no backup. I was always the kid who got in trouble for fighting when my friends were getting picked on haha.

Please don't let her get abused. You could put her in a crate near the others so they get used to seeing her again without beating her up. If she is "down" because she had an unsuccessful hatch, could you buy a couple day old chicks, that she could mother. If also might trigger her protective instincts and she might became "Super Hen and kick the daylights out of the bullies.
