so I am brand new to chicks.. and this is going to be long, but help please!
they were hatched on Sunday, and mailed overnight, we received them the next morning, which was yesterday. They all seemed happy and healthy according to “the textbook”. This morning, one had pasty butt, I took care of her but unfortunately she passed. Another seemingly healthy one passed away as well. Nothing outwardly wrong, I have no clue what happened there. So now I’m on edge about everything I’m doing. We have a titan incubator brand heat plate, I have it angled so they can either be in the high cooler side, or the lower warmer side. The rest of the brooder is 70° (Its inside a bedroom) I have the right food for them, I put electrolytes and probiotics in the water to help because of the stress of shipping, I’m using puppy pads right now going to switch to pine.. all my chicks are happily sleeping under the heat plate except one, who is squawking like no other. I can’t figure out what it could possibly want, and worried something is wrong with thier brooder. I understand that sometimes they just pass, but I want to make sure there isn’t anything I’m missing. TIA

I've had bantams die that I received in mail before. They seem to get chilled very easily. It kind of sounds like your chick might be cold. 70 degrees is a little chilly. Do your chicks seem to be huddling together? If so they could be too cold. I've never used a heat plate. I've always used a lamp.

they only huddle under at night or when they take naps. All day long they are very active, running all around. The run under and warm up for a minute, then they zip back out. I was told this is normal for the heat plate. 70° is the “cold side” of the brooder. I was instructed not to heat the whole brooder. ‍♀️
