So I've had my ducklings for a little over two months now and I've really enjoyed watching them grow up and go about their daily routines. What worries me is that people say that there is no such thing as a quiet duck ( except for the muscovy which I do not have) and I live within city limits. So my question is what age do ducks really start becoming loud? Because for the most part, besides my pekin, My ducks dont make that much noise at all. Thanks~ =]

It will depend....mine are relatively quiet unless something is trying to go after them, or they are chatting with each other lol I have 3 muscovies, 3 female pekins, a female runner and 2 buff geese....they are all relatively quiet....with the exception if they are scared ie a hawk or something flying overhead

All males are quiet of any species of ducks (except shelducks )So thats one half taken care of right off the bat. I too live in the city and the only duck I would say would ever be a problem for your neighbors would be a female call duck. Of couse all noise is relative. To answer your question right about where your at . 2 months is when the hens start "talking"

hmm my female ducks are as follows: 1 runner, 1 mallard, and 1 pekin. So I guess i should just wait and see, If they do decide to start quacking none stop I guess i'll try raising muscovies instead, their face kinda scares me though. :O

I've been noticing many posts lately about the noisiness of ducks...

I think there is a misconception about ducks going on. In my limited experience, they are not noisy all the time. There are some things that will guarantee some quacking such as fear, a separated from the group duck, and excitement. For the most part they talk quietly to themselves and each other, eat, poop, swim, and sleep and they dont stand around yelling their heads off for no reason. Again, this has been my experience and it could be I just have weird ducks.

My girls (khaki Campbell) are noisy when they go out first thing in the morning but settle down quickly. It's spring breeding season in the Northern Hemisphere, so our quackers are also noisy when they are doing the courtship activities but it is never constant or for very long. We barely notice. I put my waterfowl in the barn at night and let them out when the neighborhood is awake and noisy (kids, lawnmowers, etc.) in the morning.

The drakes of course are quieter as their voice is softer.

I wish i knew how to underline because when you said" they don't just stand around yelling their heads off for no reason" made me laugh out loud.

I agree. I have 3 very noticable female ducks, 2 pekins and 1 runner, oh and 2 buff geese one of which just found his honk {{{sigh}}} and they are only noisy when something they don't like is near their pen...ie the dogs lmao or there is a hawk flying overhead or something.....or if they know I'm coming to feed them....other then that they are very quiet happy ducks and geese

Thats good to hear =] I was worried because people kept telling me my ducks were going to become loud one day, and i'd hate to have to give them up. But I havent seen a hawk or other form of predator lurking around my house in quite some time so they should remain quiet I hope. Just out of curiosity, do hawks really eat adult ducks? D:
