Hey there. I don't have speckled Sussex but I was just letting you know I'm in Shreveport too. I have mainly Orps and Bielefelders with a few more breeds. I love SS though. Sweeties.

Any help on a good place to purchase chicks? I'm near the New Iberia/Lafayette area and not sure exactly where I should start my search to find good quality chicks.

I saw you found our Louisiana layers thread. That's a great place to look for chicks. Many of us are hatching or know of others that are. First do a little research to see what type you want. Egg layer, meat bird, ornamental, etched... A lot of use so dual purpose/ heritage breeds. You'll find a large assortment of breeds in the Louisiana thread.
Welcome aboard!

Yes haha I made my initial post on Louisiana layers then saw a post that said I needed to post here if looking for chicks. Oh my goodness I thought there was only egg and meat birds so I'll have to do more research into all the other types. I most certainly want an egg layer but perhaps will move into the meat chickens later on. I had planned on buying breeds that were tolerant to heat such as the red frizzle Cochin bantam, araucana, porcelain bantam, blue silkies, or blue andalusians. My husband and daughter want to have cool looking chickens haha

I'm considering getting some Bielefelders. Does anyone in the state (I would not be opposed to a drive into east Texas) have them so I wouldn't have to pay shipping fees? I only want one roo and 3-4 hens.
