"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Well guys we had an exciting day yesterday around the house. Yesterday morning while I was dropping feed for the horses, I checked one of the mares that is do to foal on Saturday and notice that she had started to wax over (I saw milk). Last night while I was cleaning the stalls and feeding this mare who is normally quite, kept walking around me in the stall and would not stand still so I knew she was close real close. I told my wife that I thought we were going to have a baby tonight and with-in an hour and a half this is what we had.

The foal was born at 8:45 these pics are from about 8:46 to 8:55. All three of us my wife, my little girl and I got to watch everything from start to finish. If you know anything about horses most people never get to see this at all.

Never the less it was a very exciting evening last night for us all and we get to do it again in about 3 weeks!!!!

Chris

Simply beautiful! :love

I think my turkey eggs are scheduled to hatch this weekend (in the incubator). For some reason I 'm not excited. I guess the constant checking of the temps and adding water to the incubator has turned me all the way off from using an incubator. I never had to do any of this with my broody hens. After this hatch, I may try some goose eggs but then I think this baby (incubator) is going in the closet. It's more fun checking my broody hens to see if any babies are peaking out from under them. Maybe it's just me, but no fun with the bator. A waste of money for me. :/

Oh how great I love the brand new baby foals running around in the early springtime its a joyous sight as they are so playful and full of energy. I have myself been witness a couple of times of the whole birthing process, and you are right in saying it is a rarity for most to get to enjoy even for the owners/caretakers of the mares as they are very reluctant in foaling with any by-standers or audiences around. Ive had times sharhing birth watch for friends and some for myself eons ago when I was into the horse thing. And no matter how long you sit on duty waiting they seem to always time it perfectly 'bout the time for a potty break or getting a drink or eats. the few times saw the live birthing was darn near accidentally by just showing up in time.

PS that's a beautiful Overo paint in the background I have a friend in Ark. that raises those type paint quarter horses.

Thanks Jeff, the Paint belongs to my wife and she is the one that is due in 3 weeks or so.....

This is the daddy for both the foals. The owner of the stud also owns the mare that had the foal last night.

Well, last night was day 8 of my first hatch in the Brinsea incubator. I started out with 27 eggs (12 BLRW from Mike & 15 shipped Basque Hens), but due to a major boo-boo on my part, I only set 24 of them. I put my 2 open boxes of eggs down while I was doing final prep only to find that my 2 Bengal cats decided to climb in the tiny boxes with the eggs. They cracked 2 of the BLRW and 1 of the BH eggs.

Boy I have to watch those 2 carefully!

Now the good news! Nine of the 10 remaining BLRWs appears to be developing fine (1 was a quitter), and 10 of the 13 shipped BH eggs look good (1 quitter and 2 clears). Isn't that pretty good for travelling eggs? This is my first time incubating, so I'm not really sure. Even the BLRWs went for quite a drive! Crossing my fingers that most of the remaining eggs make it. When should I candle again?
