"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Oooh yeah, a chicken swap!!! I will have to come and see what everyone brings. I will bring my suspected patridge silkie roo #2 if he doesn't turn out to be a hen by then. That is the day my chicks are suppose to start hatching though.... To leave them under the supervision of my husband or not is the real question.... hmmmm Hopefully I will see you all there.

Mzstre, I was planning on going to the one in Feb, but things came up! I didn't make it! If he doesn't have what we want I will be sure to make this one!! I am secretly hoping for more than 3, but I think that's going to be his limit. I want white, brown, green, blue and pink eggs though!!

Hi, everyone! Seven days left to hatching and all 20 eggs appear to be thriving! We will be building a brooder box in the next couple of days. How large does it need to be? We'll also be working on a grow-out pen. Will 12x4 be sufficient until I can move them in with the older birds? Thanks for any input!

Missi, you will LOVE your Sportsman. It's super easy to use and the hatch rates are very high. I could never get my pheasant eggs to hatch in the styrofoam incubators but with the Sportsman I hatched quite a few last year. I'm hoping it'll work better with my geese. Last year, I lost a couple of batches of goose eggs in the styrofoam incubators. By the time I finally got my Sportsman in my geese had just about quit laying. We'll see what the Sportsman does this year. For starters, I'm running mine dry for the geese. From what I've read, and Gracie confirmed, it's highly recommended for hatching geese. We'll see!

On fertility, I think as a general rule the quicker you set them the better. Although, I've hatched eggs that were two - three weeks old before.
Ha Ha isn't that the truth!!

I filled up my Brinsea a week ago with 28 eggs and I've already started saving up some more. My Sportsman should be here Tuesday!

I'm excited to see what kind of hatch I get with that bad boy. I think I will add all the eggs from the Brinsea into that when it get's here!!

Hey, I have a question.... How long can I save eggs before their hatch rate starts to decline??? It's 7 days right??

I've used cardboard boxes before, although, you really need to be careful with the light. Probably not a good idea! Plastic tubs with a light work very well. Steer clear of strofoam icechests (Ask me how I know!!). Put some marbles in their drinking water so that they don't fall in and drown. They're rather goofy sometimes! Also, last year I had used papertowels to line the bottom of the tub and some kind of way they scratched around and got the edge of the papertowel in their drinking water. The papertowel absorbed all of the water from the water container. (Must have been Bounty Papertowels - the "quicker picker upper"!!

) Luckily my husband went in the bathroom just in time to save some of the chicks trying to swim around in 3" of water. I lost about half the chicks. My point is that you just have to try. Even some of us that have been doing this for a while have weird things that happen sometimes.

Overall, it is quite an enjoyable experience. Some of us have so much fun that we continue the activity practically all year long. Possibly an addiction???

Thanks for the Welcome Grambysfarm! If I thought that a plastic bin and a clip on regular light would work, I might think about it, lol Still pretty sure I could screw that up as well though... I kill plants on a regular basis, so I'm pretty sure chickens wouldn't be that far of a stretch, although my dog is about 3 and as big as a horse.... Lol

Kind of thinking it would be fun though... Maybe if I go see if the feed store has them today, then hubs can't say no when he comes home tomorrow, but then again, I don't know if the clip on light and plastic bin would work...

Hey Twiley! I put my first 2 eggs in the incubator yesterday, so I will know later this week if we are fertile. You wouldn't happen to have an extra Buff Orpington rooster would you? My neighbor is looking for one to go with his girls.

I am currently running 4 incubators, 2 brinsea and 2 hovabators, and I am at maximum capacity. I'm either going to have to stop hatching chicken eggs to accomodate my geese, or upgrade to a cabinet! I sure wish I could find a used one in good condition.

Good luck with your eggs! I only have one Buff Orpington rooster at the moment and don't want to get rid of him. I had lots of them in the fall but sold them off when we moved. Bad timing.

Grambysfarm...I'm almost scared to ask about the icechest. Hopefully it is just my imagination, but it sounds like it may have been traumatic!

Do you think a plastic tub will be big enough if most or all of the 20 eggs hatch? I was thinking about building a permanent brooder outdoors (either in my coop or next to my coop). Have you brooded outdoors? I know they grow really fast; how long can I keep them in the tub if I keep them indoors? Would I still need a "transition" brooder before they go to the grow-out pen? Sorry for all the questions, but I really appreciate the advice!

And...I think you're right about the possible addiction. I have a few birds now that I got from Mike (sweet, sweet things!) and the eggs in the incubator, but I can't stop looking at egg auctions, lol! My dear hubby just finished the current project and I am already thinking I need more pens. Uh-oh!
