"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hey there La-yers and BYCers too,

Chris I candled the 9 NH eggs that survived the trip last eventing (day 7) had one blood ring, tossed it, and one (?) left it and 7 definite developers so that's a good sign so far.

Yawl I got some of the most awesome looking RIR pullets youve ever laid eyes on thanks to Chris and his generosity/great deal he gave me. the little roos not so much yet as they always look gangly and ragged to me for some time after the lil' gals start getting all dolled up LOL

Not yet Terri, but I do see them investigating the nest regularly though I also just removed them from the presence of their pestering brothers too, so now they can concentrate a little better. They are in with an older NH male but he is a gentleman compared to those 2 guys, they are very hormonal right now

LOL

I have 10 other Horstman RIR pullets too Terri these I did get straight form Chris, and 6 boys one of the best pullet to rooster ratios I ever have stumbled across for sure. I'm smiling big right now gonna be reds everywhere next year at this time along with Barred Rocks, New Hampshires and a brand new strain(mine) of Delawares if all goes as planned. Yee-haw!

Good morning everybody! It's so nice & cool outside here. I found out we have skunks out at our old barn -- was heading to the mulch pile late last night w/the leftover pulp from my plum jelly & came face-to-face with a very large skunk! It did a handstand then changed its' mind & ran under the barn. Time to move my trap! I sure wish I'd had my shotgun with me.

Have two very nice eggplants & some tomatoes from the garden so I know what we're having for supper tonight -- stuffed eggplant! :drool

In the meantime, have pickles to put up so will hop to it. I love this time of year!

Julie have another pea egg for you! Also, I candled last night & saw veins for sure in one of my eggs -- not sure about the other one - I swear, after I do one or two it's like I lose eyesight or something & everything looks the same -- & I'm afraid to leave the top off the bator for any length of time, so I just do a quick sniff around & if I don't smell anything iffy I leave them alone. But all is looking good as far as I can tell.

I love the smell of skunks.

I'm so excited about the pea eggs. I'm not good at candling. I have no idea what I'm looking at when I candle. :gig

Ok everyone, I have some good news and some bad news. I will start with the bad news first and then tell you the good news.

The bad news is that I took some pics on yesterday but I forgot my camera at home.

Now on to the good news.......................................

I have a pea chick that hatched on yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:weee :celebrate :ya :bun :jumpy :cd :yiipchick :yesss: :highfive:

When I got home on yesterday and checked my broody hens, I picked up a hen and noticed that she was only sitting on 1egg. It appeared that 1 of the eggs was missing from a hen that was setting on 2 pea eggs. I immediately became disappointed because I thought that my murdering hens had cracked open another egg and ate it. As I raised her up a little more, I saw a perfectly hatched egg with no chic. I got disappointed yet again because now I'm thinking that my thuggish hens and turkeys came into the hen house and dragged the baby out of the nesting box and killed it. As I felt under her more, I saw a fuzzy butt pointed right at me. The fuzzy butt fell from the back of the hen and lo and behold it was a PEA BABY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:weee :celebrate :ya :bun :jumpy :cd :yiipchick :yesss: :highfive:

I was soooooooooooooo happy. It must have hatched throughout the day because it wasn't there on the previous night nor was it there when I checked that morning. It was fully dry. It's BIG!!!!!!!!! And the feathers look like that of a 2 week old chicken. Terri, the wing feathers are LONG !!!!!!!!!!!!! I was shocked to see such a difference in a chicken, turkey and pea chick. And the feet are HUGE!! It reminds me of a 13 year old that wears a size 17 shoe. :gig

So, I immediately took it and brought it inside and put it in my brooder. Since it will be alone for now, I had to get out the marbles to put them in the water and feed to try to convince it to eat. At 9:00 PM, it kept chirping and didn't want to settle down. I know that it can go without food and water for a couple days but I didn't want to take the chance I boiled a guinea egg for it and put the yoke in the brooder. As soon as I set that yolk down, it TORE IT UP !!!!!!!!!! The poor little fella was hungry. Gosh, it had only hatched earlier that day. I thought it shouldn' t he that hungry. So Terri, keep an eye on your pea chics as far as how soon they begin eating. Anyway, after it ate the yolk, it stopped chirping. So, he took a nap and was up piddling around. I was a nervous wreck all night worrying about the little fella.

I woke up this morning and he was up and at'em. I picked up some of the yolk that was still in it's brooder and it began to eat out of my hand. :love He is sooooooo cute!!

I wish that he had a pea buddy. Maybe the other eggs will hatch and he can have a buddy. I have 3 pea eggs from the original bunch still under my broody hens and have added more pea eggs under some hens. The pea eggs in the incubator are scheduled to hatch on the 15th. Terri, when is lock down for your pea and guinea eggs? Humidity in the incubator has been great. It's registering between 43-50. I am soooooooooooooooooo hoping all of the pea eggs hatch. :fl

I wished for at least 1 pea egg to hatch and it did. So, if no others hatch, I'm ok with that.

I will post pics of the little fella on tomorrow.

Thanks to all who wished me good wishes and luck on the pea eggs. This little fella heard you.

:weee :celebrate :ya :bun :jumpy :cd :yiipchick :yesss: :highfive:

Yeah!!! Congrats on the pea chick. I KNOW you're exited!! SO much fun!!!  When you and Terri get too many pea chicks -- I want some. :love

Thank you. Will let you know the pea chic count.

You don't have to have a pond to have ducks. I don't have a pond. I have kiddie pools. I have about 60 ducks.

I would love to see a picture of your setup! My husband is going to kill me. :D

My setup is really nothing to it. I just have ponds placed in different areas in the chicken yard. I will try to take pics and post this week.

So do you use a coop, run and then put the kiddie pools in the run? I would love to see photos of your setup or Julie's. I wish someone sold duck eggs at the Farmers Market. I want to use them for baking. Then I wouldn't need to buy ducks!

Well, mine are only a few weeks old so we haven't gotten that far yet but right now there in the outside brooder and we use a pan that they get in!! Trying now to figure out something a little bigger for them!!

TOO CUTE !!!!!!!!!

They are "waterfowl" -- they love water no matter how big or small. They will congregate around a mud puddle if need be. The small blue kiddie pools work great and are very easy to dump out and clean up. I really like the bigger plastic pools for my geese but the downfall to the bigger size is that they're harder to clean out. What I've done with the bigger pools is cut a hole on the side and installed a drain to make it easier to drain and clean.

Here is a pic of my geese in a small toddler pool that my grandchildren outgrew. Obviously, they're too big for the pool but it didn't stop them from enjoying the water. :gig

Adorable !!!!!! :love
