What med did the vet use?
Those two cockerels honestly sounded FINE when I picked them up. I checked them. Got them home and one went to sneezing and coughing and sounding horribly congested. The next morning, the other one started. I gave them vitamin water thinking it was just shock from the ride and maybe some cold air hit them coming home.

Vet had to come on the day after that, listened to them both and said that the lav orp didn't sound too bad, but the heritage RIR was on his last legs with it--give them both Sulmet. I know it can be harsh, so I added it to their water every day for about 3 days. They were less congested sounding, but still coughing and sneezing. The RIR was horrible...I even told DH to just put him out of his misery. After 7 days on the Sulmet, they were both better, but still some sneezes here and there. So I went back to the vitamins and lots of proteins. A week later I had gone to feed and water them one evening and the lav orp was walking around gasping and rattling in his chest and sneezing. He was fighting for every breath he took. I went for the Sulmet again and tried steam to clear him up, but he didn't make it through the night. It just crept back up on him.

The RIR kept on with the sneezing and never would stop. Then he started a moult. Man, did he look miserable. I kept up with my routine of vitamins and gave even more Sulmet. Still sneezing and coughing started again. I told my family this was his last chance to heal. I started the neomycin I had. This time I gave it to him with a syringe instead of mixing it with his water gallon. We are now a little over a week of that and he seems better. Color is good. Only caught him sneezing once in the past three to four days. I'm hoping he pulls through.

kuntrygirl--Hilarious story! Loved it!

oh geez, i'm so sorry for sending you over there! I know it was heartbreaking and expensive! now i know not to buy anything from him but maybe eggs and pickled quail eggs, and now i am wondering about those too. one of the fresh eggs was all white and creamy looking and just didn't look right! thanks for the warning! hope your new roo will be the love of your life and healthy!
Garilyn,

I did get eggs from his brother and I still have 6 chicks from him. Those eggs hatched beautifully !They are all fine. Usually, chicks and eggs are okay as long as they haven't been exposed to sick adult birds. And like I said, they were fine when I was there looking at them. Something in them though to have come out from the stress of the trip home.

I have lots setting, too.

Arkansas Blues, BLRW, Sicilian Buttercups, Olive Eggers, BBS Copper Marans, Show Lined Silver Penciled Rocks, blue Wheatens, and some silkies and showgirls.

Mzstre--I've only got 3 of 6 BLRW growing. I may need to get with you if I don't at least get a pair. How many did you set?

I bought a SQ group of BLRWs from Jerry Foley several months ago. He put the group together for me and I am very pleased. The pullets started laying about a month ago, and today marks the 3rd week they've been separated from the mixed flock so the eggs are pure. It seems like I've been waiting forever to put their eggs in the bator, and now I don't have any room in one lol! I have 2 Brinseas, but 1 is full of my brother's duck eggs. They're due to hatch on the 17th or 18th, so as soon as I get the bator disinfected, I'll be filling it. I have eggs being shipped to me at the end of the week though, so I think I'll only have room for 6-8 of the BLRWs. Ack! I need another incubator, but my DH would kill me. I'll be setting quite a few once I make room, though. Do you ever make it to the Baton Rouge area?

Good Rainy Morning everyone! Hope no one setting loses power today.

Mzstre--You must have beat me to it...I asked Jerry Foley around Christmas time for a grouping and he told me he didn't have any more in the age range I wanted, only chicks. I have only been to Baton Rouge once (I'm a Texan converted to Cajunism, ya know) but I may get you to ship me some eggs once you confirm good fertility. I hope my three make it. You wouldn't be planning to attend the Leesville show in March, would you? Or the April show?
