"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

My dad got me up at 5:30 because he heard a peep. We heard another one a few minutes and and we officially have cracking!

Congrats! I love hatch day! :D
Me too

Cool. Thanks for the help. Is there a specific bleach to water for the solution? I was just worried about the formaldehyde.

2 pips now! And they're not due to hatch till tomorrow!

Thanks!

I have no way to measure humidity. I will have to buy a hygrometer next time. I would not assist for probably 12 + hours without progress, and even then I would be reluctant, but I will if necessary. I have 3 reservoirs. The one with the most surface area is getting low. I might stick in a damp towel really fast, or get water in through a long straw. I haven't ever had humidity problems before with this incubator though.

Just a waiting game...

We use a 32 oz spray bottle and add just a capful of bleach. Once it has dried a couple of weeks it will be fine. Remember that many building materials have formaldehyde in them--if you've ever walked into a new mobile home on a lot, the formaldehyde smell will knock you back. And people move right into them... it will air out fairly quickly.

New chick pics. : -)
Beautiful!

Never used bleach here; just water -- but don't touch them right now! go do something else & leave them alone!

Oh big DUH! I thought you were talking about bleach in the 'bator! never mind! (not too excited here for you)!

No movement today. Hoping for something tomorrow. I would post a pic, but the 'bator isn't in a well-lit area and the light from a flashlight doesn't light up the eggs well. For the bedding in the brooder, I think I'll shred some newspaper. We have tons since we're moving soon. Hey kuntrygirl, how do you tell if pallets are safe to use? I didn't see any markings on the ones I've seen. I'll probably be getting some wood from Home depot. They have that 70% off bin with some crazy stuff. Some of the wood is actually bad, but they put some in there because of cosmetics, like to grainy or to many knots. I saw a perfectly fine 4' x 8' sheet in there for like $3. I'll paint over it, so it was a steal. Was in the wrong vehicle though

I know you asked someone else--but I'm here so I will answer what I do. We use pallets for all of our coop building. We clean them with a bleach solution and let the wood air out for a few weeks before using it. We have never had an issue using pallet wood. Those discount bins are also a great place to look. We are all about recycling at our place. The only things we have purchased for our coops are screws, wire, staples, and the roofing. Everything else has been a freebie.
I get my pallets from the same place all the time and I know they are safe. The pallets that I use are used to transport glass. So there are no chemicals on the pallets. I get large wooden boxes from a local machine shop and they get large items wrapped in plastic and placed in the wooden shipping boxes, so their boxes are always clean. If I get anything from another source, I always make sure to clean it very well in the event there is some type of chemical on it that I can't see or smell. That always seems to work . I have never had any problems from the free pallets. wooden boxes or shipping crates that I have gotten in the past. JohnnyxRex , thanks for the reminder about the discount bin. I almost forgot about that. ;)

I have been working on making sure my animal first aid kit and med kit is stocked up with meds/vaccines that are not expired, so I was wondering if everyone else is making sure that they have everything needed for their animals? It's good to have everything right there in the event you have an emergency you don't have to panic and try to get the the feed store or try to order meds to administer to your chickens or other animals.

I am printing out a lot of info and putting it in a 3 ring binder so that I can have it at my fingertips in the event of an animal emergency.
