"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I let me girls out to free range a little in the beautiful sunshine yesterday. My Maltese mix was "grazing" with them LOL. He blends right in with his coloration and fuzziness.

Hi Everyone.
I've been reading this forum for a while; but just joined today. I wanted to say hello on this thread. So nice to see the community here. We live in New Orleans and keep a small flock of Americaunas, Wyandottes and Orpingtons.

I used to have some Mottled Javas and lost the contact info for the person I bought them from (somewhere in the Northshore). Wanted to get a Java roo from her and breed my girls. Now I wouldn't mind getting some new Java pullets AND a roo! If anyone knows of anyone with nice mottled Javas in Louisiana, please let me know. Thanks!

Thank you all for the welcomes!
Let me ask around -- I'm just across the river from you in Alex. I might know of somebody who would do this.
and :welcome

That would be so great. I have all this wood, and no time or know how to use it. All the prefab coops are either too small, too poorly made, are waaaaaay to expensive.
Please let me know if you find someone. :)

great to see lots of new names on the thread! it was around this time last year that i created an account on BYC too....i don't want to know how much money i've spent on chickens since then

X2 on when I started (one month after you) AND on the MONEY!!! LOL

That smiley was for the amount of money I've spent. There's no sign of letting up either. LOL

Afternoon all! Welcome newcomers!

I spent my morning feeding/watering/cleaning coops and then had the joy of trimming beaks and nails for birds we are taking to the Magnolia show. Our first time showing anything and I'm REALLY LOST! Just going through the motions of what I have gathered from others. Chickens do NOT enjoy having their beaks and nails trimmed just FYI--I have the scars to prove it. Since it is spring break for us this week, my 8 year old and I collected eggs--still warm--and then came in to bake Snickerdoodles with them. I used one of the eggs from his favorite and almost decapitated -but now healed up nicely -hen. He was thrilled. May not be any cookies left when anyone else gets home today.

So in getting birds ready for this show next week I found a problem with my emu gened wyandotte cockerel. Remember how I had to put him in jail for not playing nicely with others--well he's been locked in a wire cage plenty big enough. But he's been rubbing his rosecomb along the top of the wire cage and now it's got places on the comb turning black! Ugh!! I neosporined it, but don't know what else to do to get that comb looking good in a week. He will be moving into his own luxury jail suite this weekend after we finish putting the top on the new pen for the Lavender Orps and the RIRs. Big pen for them--each group is getting a 15 x 10 run. They should be happy. The RIR cock is having a hissy fit trying to get to the hens I got from Terri--he's totally BESIDE himself trying to reach them. Talks to them half the day, preens himself so he's all handsome the rest of the day. It's hilarious! Once he goes in his big pen with those two girls and my RIR hen that he doesn't even yet know exists I'm sure his excitement will escalate! Wow! 3 women!

Hope everyone is well! Friday for all of you tomorrow! Stinks for me because that'll be the end of my spring break. Ugghhhh

First, and most pressing question I have is for anyone local capable of building a coop...... I have access to 100+ wooden pallets, but I'm no carpenter, and my husband just doesn't have the time. If I provide as many pallets as available (that you want), is there someone that could build a reasonably priced stationary 4x4ish coop to sit inside an enclosed chicken yard?

Pineville, LA (central)
Wow so happy to find this thread. I'm a first time chicken owner, stumbling along as I read up. I have soooo many questions.

Well first make sure that the pallets are not chemical coated. Petrus has a lot, but I'm not sure if they are safe. Terri and I are also in cenla.

If you look on our craigslist or at Petrus you will find a ton 'o' coops. Tractors and permanent. Personally I felt like most were not reasonably priced, especially when I knew how to get cheaper wood. I am also on a similar page to you except I already have birds and a wood brooder/grow out pen. Keep us posted.

My birds just aren't used to "regular" treats yet. When I hold out the chick crumble mix or a mealworm they climb over each other to get to it but when I put in a few spinach leaves they were looking at me like "are you trying to kill us?" They ate it later though
