"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I'll have to check it out next month. I know if I go this month, with the flock still young, I'll end up buying chicks. It's too much of a temptation. :)

Celie, what kind of rabbits do you raise? I may be interested in some.
I raise New Zealand Whites, Just PM me if you are interested,
LOL

Oh yea, they are asking for scovies but I'm not listening. I won't hatch any of them until 2020.

It's amazing how so many people what so much. Everyone is trying to have their own eggs and meat and I can't blame thing.
I had a local vet come to buy some meat rabbits and he called it "Obama-siding"! With the way this nation's economy is going, people are looking for a sustainable food supply for their family. There is a real fear that they will not have food for their families!

Here are my sweet Ladies! We've gotten 9 eggs since Monday! Totally excited! In fact, they warmed right up to us. I walk out now to see them and they all come up to the fence or the door to the coop to greet me.

It has been a sweet few days having our first set of hens. We are thinking maybe next year getting chicks.

Buff Orpingtons are very gentile and lovable birds, you can't go wrong with that breed for BIG medium brown eggs and good sized extra roo for Gumbo. They go broody easily and make great mothers!
Does anyone know of anyone in South Louisiana who re-habs opossums? I found a dead mama and some dead babies on the side of the road but 2 were still alive. We picked them up and put them in a field. People were trying to run over them and I couldn't see that happening to them. I know a opossum is a predator but those babies were so cute. It took everything out of me to leave them there.

If anyone knows any re-habbers, please let me know.

Those critters have your scent now and when they grow up, they will be back to raid your chicken coops!!!LOL

Julie, how about just posting your recipe? I made some wine/Liqueur out of a bucket of wild blackberries, but it was so strong, you could only drink a very tiny juice glass!! I was young at the time (20's) and after 3 Hurricanes, I lost all my old, not often used, recipes.

I live just south of Baton Rouge, in Iberville parish. I'm glad to hear there is a large network! I hear from people from all over the states, just never Louisiana.

I was interested in getting some Welsummers, mottled Cochin, golden laced and blue laced red Wyandotte, speckled Sussex, Black Australorp, salmon favorelle, olive egger, and Orpington. I want a colorful basket and a calm, colorful flock. Ideally, I'd like to be able to get the chicks at the same age, even if that means I have to drive all over the state, but I realize with such a large array of chicks that may be impossible.

Also, just out of curiosity, is there anyone in the state that breeds the Mille fleur color for any breed?
I am about 3 hours from you, but will have mille fleur d'uccle chicks by next month--I have all my d'uccles penned together right now and will be separating them this weekend for pure babies. These are show quality lines and beautiful. I can pm you pictures of mine if you'd like. If you want calm birds--NO gold laced wyandottes! The blue laced reds and wonderful, but the gold laced are flighty and the roos are kind of on the wild side. The one in my avatar has already killed one of my other birds and half decapitated another. He doesn't like it when he doesn't get his way. Calm birds???---Orpingtons are the way to go.

Hello! I'm new to the forum and live in southern louisiana. I was wondering where you guys get chicks from. Are there several reputable places or breeders here, or is it more of a gotta know someone network? I currently have a flock but am interested in raising some chicks when the current ones grow. I hate to order online because shipping is so stressful. I'd much rather be able to pick up chicks.
I have order many chicks that have been shipped. My last shipment came all the way from Iowa in Februaury weather. Didn't loose a single one! If you are concerned about the travel time, then maybe try Ideal Poultry. They are located in Texas and usually arrive within a day. Or you could always just post what you are looking for on here and someone can most likely point you in the right direction! There is a pretty good network of people on this thread that can usually help out!

Morning all. I led someone to this thread a few days ago in the Alexandria TSC. They said they were on BYC but had no idea there was a Louisiana thread.

I have 2 birds getting BIG (well, they're all big, but these are bigger). One is probably mad at me though, because I switched feeders and she would always perch on the old one.

I'd love to see some pictures! I know it is a relatively rare/new color, so I sort of feel like I hit the jackpot just now. And thank you for the info! I'll steer clear of the gold laced.

Yes, the travel time is my biggest concern. Plus, I like to get an idea of the quality and temperament of the birds. How good is Ideal poultry? Do you generally get the correct breed and physically sound birds? I know places like mypetchicken sometimes sell the wrong breed.
