"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hey, do any of you know where I can buy vegetable-based all purpose chicken crumble in the New Orleans area? My silkies are hitting 4 months and I want to switch them from start-n-grow to an all purpose feed that I can prepare as FF. This means it can't have any animal protein in it. I didn't think it would be any big deal to find it. Well, today I tried and struck out big time. I checked the Double M stores, Jefferson Feed and did an online search for local stores with such a product. I think TSC carries Purina Flock Raiser but we don't have a TSC on this side of the lake. I ended up ordering some online but would really prefer to buy local

have you asked your LFS if they would order it for you?
Great idea. I'll ask.

I have been making and feeding FF for a few weeks...the birds LOVE it and my feed bill has been cut in half!!! My feed has fish meal for protein and I have had no problems at all. What is your concern with animal protein? I am not sure about all animal proteins, but fish meal does not spoil or go rancid if it is fermented properly and fed regularly.

Thanks so much.

I have blue swedish, which are beautiful, but like to keep to themselves. My new duckie grandbabies are pekins. One crested and the one we grabbed yesterday isn't. Both of them just follow us everywhere talking away. The first one we had will have a fit if we walk away and he loses us. He goes around in circles screaming like he's dying until one of us calls to him and he can find us again. It's comical. The crested was our first white duckling so my daughter named him Aflac. So when she got the other yesterday she named it Flo. We have a theme for each grouping of animals. Funny, but it helps us remember everyone we keep. We don't really start naming them until they're almost point of lay age and we know they are staying for sure.

All of our RIRs have country and western male names and the girls all get mexican call girl type names. Interesting. Now the pitiful group is the little d'uccles. Hubby got to name those--Dukes of Hazzard characters and female country singers from the 70's. We have Bo, Luke, Boss Hogg, Roscoe, Daisy, Tanya Tucker, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, and Crystal Gayle.

I'm sure of what you're thinking. Insanity doesn't run in my family. It strolls through casually, taking the time to get to know everyone personally.

Hi Chicken Jo! What kind of rocks?

I can just see that little duck freaking out.

I recently hatched a batch of ducklings and brought them to my grandson. After I got home another duckling hatched and that was the end of the hatch. A couple days later I hatched one sebbie gosling. They have been keeping each other company ever since. I try to handle the sebbie goslings often so that they get used to me. Now, every time I pick up that little gosling the little duckling goes crazy crying. You'd swear I took away their best friend -- I guess I did!

I'm not sure now how I'm going to separate the two of them.

You may not! They may be lifelong buddies. *insert some beautiful rendition of "You've Got a Friend in Me" here*

Love the names! And this reminds me of my family lol!

Why does it need to be and animal protein free? I FF but have never worried about protein (animal) content in it.
What feed are you both using to ferment? Hubby and I have talked about trying it. My feed bill is skyrocketing from all the young freeloaders. I've been doing sprouts and fodder to help, but I would like to see a good sized cut in feed.

If you don't want to use animal protien, then wouldn't soybean meal make a very good protein booster? I know some people are against soy as well, so I don't know if you are interested in going that route. I know a lot of broiler rations consist of soybean meal, so it should make a safe additive to your mix. I even read that I can give it to my sheep if they need extra protein.

Well we went to the chicken swap in Moss Bluff to try and sell some silkie chicks. Talk about a big waste of time! I was selling them for half of what I usually charge, and people still thought it was too high

I just packed my babies up and took them home! Ain't nobody got time fa that!

I watched this one guy try beat everyone up over prices. Only wanted to pay $10 per laying hen

As of right now, my place is in hatch mode. Almost all of my silkies are broody, one out of 3 geese is broody, pekings are starting to lay, and I have a full incubator already! Someone needs to tell these freeloading youngsters to hurry up and grow so they can start pulling their own weight around here!

We are done with lambs for this year. Got 3 boys and 1 girl. 2 of the boys will be going to Grambysfarm, one was sold within a week, and we will be keeping the little female. We also picked up a new commercial Katahdin ram lamb yesterday that I hope will add a little size to our flock. We will also be getting a registered ram lamb from Grambysfarm. Between the two of them we should have a nice batch of lambs next spring!

We picked the new ram up yesterday, and figured the dog crate would be the easiest thing to transport him in at this age. Well as you can see, my husbands hunting dog was not too pleased about this new guy hanging out in her crate! As soon as we opened the door, she hopped in there and looked at him as if to say "Man dad, this sure is a funny looking bird dog!"

Here is the new man! We are taking name suggestions

We are trying to come up with something manly and worthy of a future herd sire. He is a nice Mocha color, but we definitely can't call him that!

Here is the rest of the crew ready to greet him.

We are also expecting a litter of AKC registered German Shepherd puppies next month. Should have some traditional Black and tans and some sables. Dam is a black and tan from Heidelberg lines with OFA certified hips and elbows. Dad is a dark sable with a lot of drive. Puppies would make great prospects for herding, therapy dogs, family pets, and even protection training. Send me a PM if you are interested! Picture below is of the Dam. She is one the larger side for a female weighing in at 84 lbs. at our last vet visit. The sire probably weighs around 80lbs. as well.
