"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Having Horses & now chickens I should have learned never paint your barn / chicken coop WHITE for some reason Flies like the color white. The Fly trap bags should be placed away from your house, coop they attract flies so place them away from all structures to draw the flies out to the bags. And I am so glad to post to day that Chi Chi the Chinchilla is okay, I was changing out the front door to my house yesterday so of course I turned off the AC Chi Chi got over heated poor thing was just laying there heart rate was so fast I was so scared I had killed it ran to the kitchen placed it in a sink of cool water then sat in front of a fan drying it off. It is back to it playful lil self this morning. Oh I call it "IT" because we have yet to figure out if it's male or female. My chickens have been taking a nap every day under my house were its cool smart chickens they know how to beat the heat. But I guess I will have to also freeze some water bottles for them. I have been also giving the fresh water at noon filling up & cooling water down & what the heck spray the horses off with some cool water they stand in line waiting for their turn. There goes the elec. bill well water!

Yes, for some reason, flies just LOVE the color white! Another thing that works really good for flies is called blue marlin. You can get it at the feed store. It's little blue granules and it kills them. BUT, you need to put it somewhere where the birds can't get into it. We have used that in our barns for years. Also - I wonder if you could add some garlic to poultry diets. We give garlic to the horse, donkey, and dog. We usually don't have much of a fly problem, but it seems like this year they have been striking with a vengeance. It is too hot to breathe here in north LA, so I can imagine how it is down south, with the extra heat and extra humidity!

So, I took the plunge and ordered some "baby" diapers for the geese. They arrived yesterday and we tried them out last night. They were kind of funny. I thought that they were actually kind of cute and comical running around the living room wearing their little baby goose diapers. Meanwhile, Boudreaux, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, is sniffing them and checking them out and then they start following each other around the house. I don't know if the the geese think they are a dog or the dog thinks he is a goose, but it was pretty funny. Then Boudreaux got mad, pouted, and sulked when I put the babies up for the night. He actually slept next to the brooder box. Silly dog.

LemonMeringue - The pics are too cute! The bunny reminds me so much of my Arlo. He was the last bunny that I had. Flipping them on their back can put then to sleep or in a "trance". That was always fun to do. Looks like all your animals are spoiled, too!

MotherCluckinMe - what cute little fuzzy butts!!

Kuntrygirl - I guess that I have never thought about eating a guinea.... Don't know much about them, actually. Are they game-y tasting?

I hope that everyone stays COOL in this oppressive heat (and it's not even July/August yet!!). Hopefully there is some rain coming y'alls way. It is raining here in Shreveport!! YEAH! That just means that I don't have to cut the grass for a couple days.

TruBluCG, congrats on the baby diapers. I would love to see them. Please take pics of them and post. I bet they are so cute wearing their diapers. :) LOL @ Boudreaux. Good doggie.

I may have to buy some diapers for the 2 lamb that I am bottle feeding. They have been following me in the house for weeks now. They come in, walk around, sit down and then fall asleep on the floor. It is too funny. The funny thing about having them inside is that when people come over, the visitors walk in, say hello to the lamb, pet them, have a seat and begin talking as if it is "normal" in seeing and having animals inside. :lau I ask myself and I the one who is crazy or are they the ones who are crazy because they are "going with the bit" and not saying anything about the lambs being inside. :lau Gotta love the country life. :)

Guinea meat is soooooooo delicious. Not gamey at all to me. The meat is dark. In my opinion, it has a rich, delicate taste (if that makes any sense). I would eat guinea meat before I would eat chicken or any other meat. :drool

I saw this posted on Craigslist for flies. Not sure how it works or even if it works but here goes..........

http://lafayette.craigslist.org/grd/3834838632.html

Use my bagasse(sugar cane byproduct) to help with smells and flies that come with chickens, or other livestock. I sell it in large bags for $5, after use it's easily composted unlike wood chips into rich soil. Once you try it, you won't go back to other bedding materials, this is the ultimate suppressant for animal odors.

Is guinea like quail in flavor? My husband ordered some at a restaurant, well, a trio of chicken, quail, and rabbit, and I thought it was going to taste gamey like dove. It was actually very good. Much more delicate than dove and not gamey. Once we move to acreage, we will have to rethink guineas. They are WAY too noisy for our neighborhood from what I've seen.

Where do you all put the frozen water bottles/jugs? I put one in with my broody hen and she moved away from it. I guess instinct to keep her eggs warm. Do they lie with them in the dust bathing area?

In my opinion, guinea taste better than quail.

I put the frozen jugs under the raised coops, inside the chicken house and inside the stalls.

Hi, Guys. Talking about hot weather, I wanted to send you some fotos from my house.

Last year I put pipe cleaners on the necks of a bunch of water bottles and twisted them to make a secure loop. They are all in one spot, since last year in my freezer.

Then I used curtin hooks (I had a bunch of them just lying around) to just slide on the hardware cloth in the coops/hutches so that the hook part was pointing up.

So, all I do is slip on a fresh frozen bottle and slip off the melted one and rotate back to the freezer. I'm not sure how it could be easier. These bottles, hooks and pipe cleaner loops are on their second year and seem as good as new. And, the bottles rarely get dirty because they're just hanging there, not lying in the cage.

Also, the girls literally take turns standing in the bird bath, that I put out there for them to drink from (which they do), but now it's always dirty and my girls have very clean feet. LOL I am planning on getting a small plastic wading pool for them to stand in this week.

Finally, this is my miracle surviving baby as of today. I have hand fed it from before its eyes were open. We are so bonded!!
